God Of Carnage

When two sets of parents meet to discuss a playground fight between their sons, a civilized evening quickly descends into name-calling, tantrums and tears. This sharp-edged comedy about modern life and parenting is the winner of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play. Hilarious, outrageous and savagely entertaining. French playwright Yasmina Reza has described her plays as “theatre of nerves.” Reza’s spark of inspiration for God of Carnage came from the real life experience of one of her son’s classmates, who broke a tooth in a playground fight with another boy. The victim’s mother complained to Reza that the other boy’s parents hadn’t even called to apologize. “I immediately thought that there was an interesting theme there,” Reza told the Los Angeles Times. That absent apology gave her a keen starting point. If the fraught conversation had takenplace, how long could the veneer of politesse have been maintained?

A great play full of insults, laughter and the satirical side of family life.
