Danny Atkinson of Parched Penguin: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is Danny Atkinson, whose company, Parched Penguin, is a Canadian online hub that perfects the art of drinking by serving up unique, high quality glassware, bar tools and accessories for amateur sippers to the seasoned pros…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your business in a nutshell.
Premium handcrafted cocktails, craft beer and wine deserve to be consumed using like-minded instruments.

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
Inspiration came from a lifelong admiration for these products coupled with a passion for food and drink. These pieces are not only beautiful – they are extremely functional and truly enhance the culinary experience. Parched Penguin is a focused selection of our favourite pieces through our family business, Atkinson’s.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
For me, the most rewarding part of what I do is the relationships I have built with long-term customers. There is something special about getting a phone call from someone sharing that their party or get together was a hit and we were a part of it. The most challenging part is how to sustain old-world service and sensibilities in modern times. We have a comprehensive website and technology in the store, but also believe that nothing replaces personalized service and care.

Where do you see your business going in five years?
Atkinson’s has always stocked premium barware and I saw an opportunity to create a business that celebrates the burgeoning craft beer and cocktail movement. With Parched Penguin, we are able to help our guests enjoy this innovative time in the beverage industry with vigour. In the next year, we are looking to grow our online business while items are still sold within Atkinson’s. As for future Parched Penguin stores, given the right circumstances it’s something we’ll seriously consider.

What does success look like to you?
Balance – like a great cocktail.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
I’m 30 years old – I hope the best is yet to come! To be honest, being able to learn from my parents has been an invaluable gift. I hope I can achieve what they have.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Have proper Sunday dinners with friends and family, home cooked, and at the table.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
Through our parent company we work with local charities like the Children’s Hospital Crystal Ball, Canuck Place, the Vancouver Symphony and Face The World. It goes without saying that it’s a good thing to be able to give back.

What is Notable to you?
There are tons of people who are currently taking the beverage industry in Vancouver to the next level and I think it’s incredible. From craft breweries like Four Winds in Delta and Postmark Brewing in Railtown, to the talented people mixing drinks each night in this city, it is such an exciting time to be in this business on the West Coast.

How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
Kale and bourbon. Sometimes a little ginseng after a long weekend.
