Calgary Weekender: November 27 through 30, 2014

South of the border, it’s a pretty big day; Thanksgiving Thursday.

People bond with their families, ingest an offensive number of calories, watch football like it was the moon landing, and college freshmen plan out how to dump their high school sweethearts.

But north of the border, this weekend is even bigger; it’s the last chance to warm up those war stories, brace your palate for a veritable parade of holiday flavours, and to write a thoughtful, “My Condolences” card to your liver.

So put on the weekend wool Calgary, your weekend starts now…

THURSDAY
Celebrate what feels like the official holiday season kick off with ‘Twas the Night at the CORE Shopping Centre. Word on the street is that 1960s retro-chic glam is the theme for the evening. Take advantage of outrageous deals and get into the spirit with the lighting of the monolithic Christmas tree.

And if you’re looking for a deal on something healthy, Peleton Cycle is having their own Black Friday sale on one-month memberships. If you’re already counting those in-coming Christmas calories, this is a great solution.

But if shopping just isn’t what you had in mind tonight, then you might want to head to the city’s favourite hot dog/Mexican joint (Tubby Dog) for the 10th Annual hot dog eating contest. Hey, entertainment doesn’t always have to be pretty…

FRIDAY
The day we’ve all been waiting for: Black Friday. To kick off this bizarre shopping extravaganza, Chinook Shopping Centre will be opening its doors at 7am to welcome shoppers with open arms.

Calling all music lovers. Tonight you can catch a hauntingly beautiful set by Cold Specks at the Gateway Theatre. Currently on tour with her album Neuroplasticity, she’s back to wow people who missed her debut at Sled Island last summer.

And for those of you looking to get your dance on, The Juan Maclean will be turning up the beats at the HIfI Club until the wee hours of the morning.

SATURDAY
If you’re going to start your morning off right it’s got to be Beano.

The final #‎Hawkersmarket is on this weekend and foodies will love this experience. Be the first to try out some of the best new eats in the city before the restaurants open. All the fun goes down at the Legion #1.

Anyone looking to heat things up will love what’s happening at the Bourbon Room. Take in some authentic Cuban music with Los Montalbans. If you feel like drinking booze out of coconuts and getting into the Latin groove, this one’s definitely is for you.

SUNDAY
Sunday should be all about eating, which is why you should head to #Kensington for the festive Stampede inspired breakfast. Pancakes anyone?

Tapas on your mind? Stephen Avenue’s newest restaurant, Barcelona, is also open for business.

And then you always have the zoo lights to walk off all that good eating.
