Calgary Weekender: May 24 through 26, 2013

Friday
JCI Calgary, the international leadership organization for the 18 to 39 set, is having their May Social at the Joyce on 4th at 6pm. Anyone is welcome to join and learn what the group is all about. Joyce on 4th, 506 24th Ave SW.

Imagine Dragons are playing at the BMO Centre Friday night. The indie rockers from Vegas were here in March and are back already with another sold out tour. Stop in at Vagabond Brewery on your way to the BMO Centre. The new West Coast-style brewpub is having their Grand Opening Friday night with DJs Al-V and C-sik spinning. If you haven’t been yet, swing by and try their Chuck Pilsner and fish tacos. BMO Centre, 20 Roundup Way SE; Vagabond, 1129 Olympic Way SE.

Saturday
If you’re feeling a bit artsy Saturday night, Burst, a fashion show featuring glass as the key element in the couture, is taking place at the +15 level of Eighth Avenue Place from 7pm to 11pm. The event is part of GlassPort, a gallery hop from glass exhibitions around town.

Stampede events are selling out and the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth will be here before you know it. Yoo hoo cowboy boots, where are you? If your line dancing skills are a little rusty, dust off those boots and two-step your way down to Cowboys where they’re hosting line dancing lessons every Saturday between 8pm and 10pm. The lessons are running until the end of June and you’re sure to have a hoot. Cowboys Dance Hall, 421 12th Ave SE.

Sunday
Lilac Festival is going down on 4th Street Sunday. Go hungry and grab a bite at the new Food Truck Lane. A host of bands will be playing on five different stages stretching from Elbow Drive to 15th Ave. There’s a parade that starts at 10am, 500 vendors and buskers to entertain you as you make the stroll down the pedestrian-friendly street.

If your head is a wee sensitive Sunday morning and a parade is not your ideal form of recuperation, hit up the new Local 8th Ave for their Recovery Room Sundays. Show up before 3pm and order the banana pancakes. The Caesar comes in a boot-shaped glass and the garnishes might just score it tops in the city.

Bistro 2210 is always a calm oasis of a Sunday brunch spot on 4th Street if you’re lucky enough to snag a table during the fest. The breakfast poutine with an Americano is the way to go, but they also have a killer Croque Montreal if breakfast fare isn’t your thing. 2210 4 St SW.

Sunday night at the Hifi Club is the 17th Anniversary of Sunday Skool. DJ Rice’s house night has been running since the spring of 1996 and is sure to not disappoint on this milestone of a night.
