Calgary Weekender: March 7 through 9, 2014

Friday

Royal Canoe
The coolest band from Winnipeg is hitting the Republik on March 7th with The Boreal Sons. The group is on tour with their latest album, Today We’re Believers, which received major accolades from CBC Radio. The sextet has been busy on the road this past year playing for fans in North America and Europe. If you missed Royal Canoe at Folk Fest 2013, you’ll want to make sure you’re front row and centre for their Friday show.

Friday, Saturday

Lake House Restaurant
Over the next few months, the amount of new restaurants scheduled to open in Calgary is staggering. The Lake House is one of those restaurants and they have just opened up their doors for business. This beautiful space is located above Lake Bonavista and provides guests with a rustic dining experience. You’ll fall in love with the view, the magnificent stone fireplace and the menu that’s inspired by regional ingredients. Book a table tonight and surprise someone special.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

The Sound of Music
The Lantern Community Church is hosting a special kind of performance over the weekend. This is a sing-along musical where audience members are encouraged to participate – how can you resist singing the classics from The Sound of Music? You can look forward to “Do Re Mi,” “My Favourite Things,” and, of course, “Edelweiss.” For those of you who need a little encouragement, there will be a beer hall conveniently located in the basement of the church. There are also rumours of a yodeling competition.

Anejo’s Tasting Menu
The Big Taste starts on Friday and that means foodies will be treated to special prix-fixe options all over town for the next week and a half. If you’re in the mood for Mexican food, then Anejo is the place to be. This cantina is one of the hippest establishments in Mission with several different levels, 150+ tequilas and the best coconut chili margarita you’ll ever try. During The Big Taste, Anejo will be serving para le mesa guacamole and molcajete bowls.

Saturday

An Alberta Aviary
Okotoks is just a short drive from town and everyone loves a good road trip. On Saturday you can visit the Okotoks Art Gallery (located at 53 North Railway Street) to view the artwork of Erika Schultz. Her current exhibition, An Alberta Aviary, is from a collection of work that she produced during 2009 when she challenged herself to create one piece of artwork every day. Artists like Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh and the Art Nouveau movement have been credited as inspirations for her artwork. The Gallery is open from 10am to 5 pm.

The Palomino Anniversary Show
The Palomino is one of the best rock bars in Calgary and on March 8th they’re throwing their anniversary show. Bands like High Kicks, Sons of Bears, Lad Mags, Labcoast, Poison Pens, Daywalker, Divepool, River Jacks and Windigo will keep the bar hopping until the wee hours of the morning. This will be one crazy shindig and, like the Caesar, the Flames and the Red Mile, the Palomino is a staple of Calgary that deserves to be celebrated.
