Calgary Weekender: June 21 through 23, 2013

Friday, June 21

Ignite
Pivot is an amazing series of events that gets people out and talking about art and culture in our city. Ignite is Pivot’s latest event, which will be taking place this Friday at the Glenbow Museum. Discover one of Glenbow’s hidden spaces as the museum’s private +15 patio is transformed into a patio for sipping summer cocktails and people watching on Stephen Avenue. Raw Canvas Catering will be providing food for the soiree with treats by Village Ice Cream and entertainment by GSD; art by Dean Stanton and Jennie Vallis. For tickets, click here. Dress code calls for summer chic.

When the event wraps up, you’re nice and close to Wine-Ohs (811 1street SW) and they are one of the many Sled Island venues this weekend. Stop in and enjoy a great wine selection along with music sets by Hannah Epperson and the Abramson Singers

Stomp and Swoosh
The Calgary Men’s Chorus (CMC) will be putting on a heck of a show on Friday evening. The CMC group is unique group in Calgary’s chorus community because the CMC doesn’t sing; rather, they use percussion to create their performances, which are inspired by African dance, flamenco, percussion and gumboot dancing. This is not your momma’s chorus performance. Tickets available on the Calgary Men’s Chorus website.

If you’re still feeling like venturing out, then hop on the C- train from the U of C campus and head downtown for some late-night eats in and around 17th Avenue or 4th Street SW. Anejo is always good for late night snacks and libations.

Friday and Saturday, June 21 and June 22

Prohab Helmet Society
By now, most people have probably heard about the fact that June is bike month in Calgary, and this is the weekend to be grabbing the most important bike accessory: a bike helmet to protect your melon. Prohab Helmet Society will be hanging out at Olympic Plaza this Friday and Saturday to hand out helmets in exchange for donations. All the donations will be going towards purchasing more helmets to keep the riders of Calgary safe and stylish. If you’re grabbing a helmet at Olympic Plaza, you are only a few short blocks from the bike paths. Go for a cruise around the Bow River to show off your new lid.

Celebrate the longest days of the year this weekend with some lovely music at Knox United Church. The Consulate of the Netherlands and Iceland have partnered with The Mountain View Connection to present a night of exotic music. Several members from the Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing “Ennea’s Domein,” composed by Robin de Raaff of Holland.

There will also be a local Marimba trio called “The Northern Project,” a string quartet arrangement by Osavaldo Golijov of Argentina and piano music from the Brazilian composer Carmago Guarnieri. For tickets email: mvfest@telus.net or phone 403-240-4174.

Crossroads Market Collaboration

This Saturday, Crossroads will be working with Market Collective to host an epic art market with great local artists and crafters, a photo booth and some DJs to spin while you shop.

Be sure to look for Courtney Townsend, a photographer whose portfolio includes beautiful ethereal landscapes and equine portraits. You might also be interested in checking out Stash Needle Lounge, who will be sharing information on their upcoming summer courses. Let’s get crafty!

Sled Island Wrap-Up Karaoke Party
Broken City will be hosting the Sled Island wrap-up party this Sunday. In the crowd, there are sure to be lots of bedraggled hipsters of Calgary who will be road weary from drinking Mill St. Organics and rocking out to shows for a week straight. Come on down and give your karaoke skills a try.

The Republik on 17th Avenue will also be hosting their 4th Annual Sled Island pig roast Sunday featuring some of the festival’s favourite musicians: Thee Oh Sees, Blink Shake and a secret guest. For more information, click here.
