Calgary Weekender: July 13 through 15, 2012

One of the biggest weeks of the year in Calgary is winding down, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t a ton of stuff going on this weekend to keep any young professional busy.

Friday afternoon and evening, Oxford Stomp will be taking place at Fort Calgary. From 3:00pm to 9:00pm, this event will be featuring the Goo Goo Dolls, Theory of a Deadman, and Big Wreck.

If you love horses, then head to the John Dutton Theatre (616 Macleod Trail SE) to catch the inspiring talk ‘Seabiscuit – The Story, the Hero and the Legend’ by Lyn Cowan, PhD. Presented by the Jung Society, the Story of Seabiscuit perfectly complements the Stampede tradition of racing, horses and the spirit of the west.

If you are looking for something high-energy, head down to the grounds this weekend to catch the much anticipated GMC Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Finals.

Head down early to get rush-seating tickets to these sold out events, and see first-hand who is going to walk away with the $1.15 million in prize money. Of course, we also suggest sticking around after for the Grand Stand Show, which has been wowing crowds all week.

Love French food and culture? Head to Avec Bistro (550 11th Ave SW) Saturday between 12:00pm and 3:00pm for the official grand opening and to celebrate Bastille Day (they are a French bistro, after all). Having been open for several weeks, they’re already a hit with Calgary diners. So if you haven’t been in, this is the perfect opportunity to check them out.

If you are wanting to enjoy the sun and dance away the day, then pack a picnic, grab some friends and head down to Baker Park (9333 Scenic Bow Rd NW) between 12:00pm and 6:00pm for the 4th Annual Bownesian’s Picnic. Find a spot in the grass (there will be a prize for best picnic set-up) and dance or relax as you catch free shows by The Bitterweed Draw, The Pygmies, Buzz Elroy and His Hayseed Rockets, Los Morenos and The Bownesians.

Looking to get out of the city? Why not head to Banff and take part in Art Walk? Join Walter Phillips Gallery staff for an informative one-hour tour of public art work at The Banff Centre campus, including recent acquisitions and commissions such as Brian Jungen’s The Ghosts on Top of My Head (2010-11) and Mark Clintberg’s Meet Me in the Woods (2010).

Make a full day of it and catch the Music for a Summer Evening at 7:30pm in the Rolston Recital Hall, at the Banff Centre (107 Tunnel Mountain Drive). This is an audience favourite featuring the best young emerging and professional musicians, and the Banff Centre’s world-class faculty, from across Canada and around the world. Sit back and enjoy the program led by Juillard’s Joel Sachs, including Barry Shiffman in the riveting Tabula Rasa by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt; plus the premiere of two new works commissioned by The Banff Centre’s Emerging Composers program.
