Bahar Niramwalla: Today’s Notable Young Professional

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is Bahar Niramwalla, one of Canada’s most sought after beauty experts in the industry today. We caught up with her to find out what inspires her and what advice she would share with other young professionals…

WORK

1. Describe what you do in less than 140 characters. Go.
I dish out knowledge and tips on all things beauty in as many mediums as possible: on-air, online, in print & more! I also paint faces.

2. What was the inspiration for your career route?
Trying to find work that made me happy. I didn’t start out thinking “I need to work with this company” or “I need to be in this industry”. I left myself open to the universe and said yes to everything. With that being said, without consciously realizing it, I’ve been attracted to media and communications since the beginning. No matter what job I’ve held in the past 15+ years, all roads led to this exact spot.

3. What is the most memorable milestone in your career so far?
I’ve been afforded quite a few cool opportunities. One major cool moment was meeting and impromptu interviewing Susan Sarandon six years back at a human trafficking rights event. She was down-to-earth, cool and invited me to her (then) brand new spot called SPiN, in NYC for a little ping pong.

4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?
I’ve never liked playing that game. I feel it sets up ones’ expectations that, more often than not, won’t work out the way you think. I hope that wherever I am, I am happy, healthy and just enjoying what life has thrown my way.

5. Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Be kind, polite, friendly, open and yourself. If you’re fake, it’s obvious. If you’re genuine, the right people and opportunities will come to you. It works in all aspects of life.

6. What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
Having to adjust from years of rigid office structure, routine and security to sporadic (often 24/7) working hours, embodying every department myself, a lack of any routine and learning to adapt to constant change. Honestly, it’s not something I have actually overcome. I just learn, every day, that the hours & effort I put into my work always comes back with very fulfilling, positive results.

7. What does the word notable mean to you?
Noteworthy, which I love – I’m constantly taking notes.

PLAY

1. Where is your favourite place to wine/dine in your city and why?
Byblos on Duncan st. at King st. Best food in the city, regardless of your palate/tastes. The décor and also the management(!) are wonderful. It’s sincerely a true experience.

2. What’s the most visited website on your Internet browser? The most played song on your phone?
The Weather Network – I can’t function without knowing what the meteorologists say about the weather first thing in the morning (or two weeks from today). Boring? Yes. But I like to be as prepared as possible.

Current song of the moment (I’m so embarrassed but it’s such a good song): Justin Bieber – Company

3. Who’s one person you think everyone should be following on social media?
@GirlWithNoJob on Instagram. It’s a great funny break filled with meme’s of animals, celebs and more but, really, this individual went from posting on Instagram while not having a job to monetizing her social accounts into a job. She has 2.3 million followers and can reportedly make anywhere from $5,000-$10,000 for a brand partnership post. Colour me impressed.

4. What’s your favourite country to visit and why? And what’s the next one you plan on travelling to?
I’m all for going to new places, near and far, and try my best to visit new places each and every time I travel. Oddly enough, the next place I am ready to go back to is Barcelona, which I’ve been to once before! If you’ve been, you’d understand why. It’s a city full of an energy and heart that I have never come across before, and I’ve been to 22 different countries in my travels so far.

5. What gives you the greatest FOMO?
Missing out on friends and family time. It’s taken a while but I’ve learned that it’s not about events, nights out and instagrammable photos but really about the time spent with your circle of given and chosen people.

6. What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
The Real Housewives of any-city! It’s almost like I’m setting up to unwind with an hour of television but it’s such bad-good TV, you can’t help but feel guilty after watching.

7. What’s something you wish you didn’t spend so much money on? What’s something you wish you spent more on?
Things. You know the little things that add up and that, for some reason, never make an impact on your life. Like a fancy serving platter or that 4th pair of black heels. I’m aiming to lessen those kinds of purchases in 2017.
Travel is the # 1 aspect of life I think we all need to spend more money on! You never regret spending on a trip to discover something new.

8. And finally, what does success look like to you? Work, play, or otherwise…
After all of it, a smile on your face says a lot about you, your life and how it’s going.
