A Night of (Schmancy) Style

Every year Calgary becomes a little bit cooler when it comes to nightlife, culture and metropolitan ambiance. 2014 has been no exception to this trend with the first few weeks of the new year featuring a photography festival, a cabaret week, a world class wine tasting and a pop-up cocktail party. The Schmancy Style fashion show at the end of January was just another example of the exceptional events happening in our great city. Being held in anticipation of the Schmancy gala, the Schmancy Style evening was organized as a style guide for everyone planning to attend the Glenbow Museum’s annual gala on February 22nd. This year the key theme is leather, which was inspired by the Worn to Be Wild leather jacket exhibit going up at the museum this month.

Held at Belgo Brasserie, the pre-gala event blended chic clothing, fun club music and a wonderfully eclectic mix of young professionals. Guests showed up in their most fashionable and creative outfits to mingle with local designers while sipping on classic cocktails. A display of leather made accessories and clothing that were up for grabs to the highest bidder sat on display on the main level of the restaurant while the upstairs provided a backdrop that was perfect for photo ops.

Partygoers were decked out in everything from chunky gold jewelry, leopard print pants and towering heels to smoking jackets and sharp bow ties. As the fashion show got underway, the main floor of the restaurant was transformed into a sleek runway. Designer items in the show included pieces from Helmet Lang, Stella McCartney, Donna Karan and Alexander Wang.

The handful of local designers (Gabriel Moody, Brenda Dolphin, Malika, Farlee Mowat, Eg Forge, Bano eeMee, Marina Ortman and Kat Marks) who put together the style concepts did an extraordinary job of creating great looks for the upcoming Schmancy gala; just one of many fabulous events still to come in 2014.
