Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I am a Chartered Accountant (CA) and the Director of Development at Financial Resource Partners Inc. (FRP). FRP is a recruitment firm in Toronto that specializes in the placement of finance and accounting professionals on a contract, project and full-time basis. We are a boutique firm with many years of combined finance, accounting and operational recruitment experience. FRP has a track record of delivering the right professionals to meet with companies’ hiring objectives. FRP works closely with hiring managers, C-level executives and Boards of Directors to provide high quality staffing solutions.
Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
As Malcolm Gladwell would say, I have always been a “connector” at heart. I enjoy meeting new people and making friends wherever I go. Being able to connect people with each other has always given me great satisfaction. I love making a good fit – this was the inspiration – helping people to connect.
As well, I enjoy learning about companies, including: how they got their start, how they grew and what makes them successful. I also like learning about people, the career paths they have chosen and the challenges they are seeking. It is incredible for me to be able to learn so much about my clients’ organizations and my candidates’ lives just by the process of connecting them.
What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part of my job is when I get to extend an employment offer to a candidate for a new job. I like hearing their excitement when I give them the news. I feel honoured to be part of this process and it is great to be able to participate in these moments.
The most challenging part is obtaining new clients who have never used an external recruitment company before. It can take time for companies to fully understand the value we provide to the recruitment process.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I don’t usually like to speculate that far into the future. I believe in taking one day at a time and living each day to the best of my ability. Life is filled with surprises and the reality is that you never know what’s around the corner. So while I do believe in planning for my future and reaching goals, I think it is just as important to always be present, grow from my mistakes and take advantage of opportunities that come my way.
What does success look like to you?
Success means a variety of things to me. It must include happiness and fulfillment. As well, success is being able to inspire others around you. Success does not just come with job titles and accumulation of material possessions, it includes living a well-rounded life involving community service and giving back. Being able to effectively balance it all – work, charitable commitments, social life, friends & family, exercise – that’s success!
What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
There have been a few memorable moments throughout my career, including:
1) Obtaining my CA (Chartered Accountant) designation.
2) Meeting Jim Balsillie, co-CEO of Research in Motion.
3) Receiving a Community Leadership award from Charles Bronfman.
Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
1) Work very hard and commit yourself to high quality work. There are no short cuts.
2) Get involved in your community and charitable work. It’s never too early to start giving back and helping others.
3) Network. Network. Network. Build a network of trusted colleagues, mentors and advisors.
4) Know your values and stick to them. You will want to have a reputation of high integrity, good morals and strong values.
Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I grew up in a family that continuously supported numerous charities. Philanthropy and charity work is engrained in me and is intertwined in my daily life. I have held volunteer leadership roles and I am continuously supporting the following charities:United Jewish Appeal, Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee, Starlight Children’s Foundation, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and The Baycrest Foundation.
What to you is notable?
To me notable is someone who exudes confidence and poise. Notable is the ability to make strong and meaningful connections with good intentions. Notable people are always paying it forward. Being kind and generous to the people around us and to our communities – that is Notable!
