Meet the ‘Spearfishing Huntress’, 28-year-old French-Canadian Valentine Thomas, the world’s biggest – and perhaps only – spearfishing celebrity.
An advocate of sustainable eating, Thomas pursued spearfishing as a hobby while working in finance and is attracting a lot of attention online for sharing photos of her incredible bounty. She consumes everything she kills, by the way, which she often shares with family, friends and locals. Among her prized catches is the world’s largest Atlantic Jack.
While many are quick to dismiss her endeavour as a vanity project, Thomas insists there’s an ecological message behind her activity. (Though it would be foolish to claim flattering bikini shots aren’t part of the equation for her fame).
“[Spearfishers] have the front seat to see how the ocean is degrading, how the population of fish is going down so quickly, and how humans are having a massive negative impact on the ecology,” she told Buzzfeed. “You develop a consciousness and a drive that makes you wan to do more and encourage changes.”
