These Are the Best TV Shows Every Year Since 2000, According to Critics

There’s always that one TV show that defines a particular year or time period in your life.

It could be a time of preteen angst when you couldn’t for the life of you decide if you were Team Brandon or Dylan from “Beverly Hills 90210” (the original, obviously). Or, it could be that summer you were so obsessed with “Friends” that you begged your parents for “The Rachel” haircut in grade five.

Each year, there is that one show that is pretty much unanimously agreed as the best program of the year.

Since 2000, the review aggregator Metacritic has compiled an annual list of the year’s most loved TV show seasons by assigning scores based on their composite critical reception.


Business Insider has selected the top show each year starting from 2000. While some are the usual suspects – with repeated appearances – others present a few more surprises.

Spoiler alert: it seems everyone has a thing for the classics like “The Office,” “Breaking Bad,” “The Wire,” and “Mad Men.”
