#TheEndIsNear: People Are Naming Their Babies After Instagram Filters

When they’re influenced by everything from family history to pop culture, baby names can be as classic as they come (think, Emma or Noah, which remain strong), or so far out there that you feel sorry for a kid come roll call on the first day of school.

Well, BabyCenter just released the results of its annual Baby Names Survey for 2015, based on data gathered from over 340,000 parents in the world.

And while you may tell get to tell people you were named after your grandmother or your uncle or someone else real, today’s babies can one day say they were named after their parents’ favourite Instagram filter.

‘Cause as it turns out, the biggest influence in this year’s baby names was an app.

Though, if you think about it, some filters do actually make pretty cool, somewhat conventional sounding names. Case in point: Hudson, Reyes, Valencia, Sierra, or Clarendon.

A little surprising, however, the most popular Instagram-inspired name was actually Lux, which rose 75 per cent on the list of baby boy names compared to last year. Also popular for baby boys were Ludwig, Amaro, Reyes, Hudson, and Kelvin. The most popular Instagram-inspired baby girl names were Juno, Valencia, and Willow.

Thankfully, X-Pro II, Lo-Fi, and Inkwell did not make the list.

In 2015, the royal influence was also up, with names like Tiara, Duchess, Royalty, and Reign significantly increasing in popularity.

Of course, celebrity babies remain a strong source of inspiration; Chris Brown named his daughter Royalty in 2014, Kourtney Kardashian named her son Reign Aston, and Lil’ Kim’s daughter is Royal Reign. (I’m not saying these were smart decisions, I’m just saying they were decisions that were made.)

The most popular baby names, however, remain Jackson and Sophia.
