Summer Hot Spot: JAROblue

If you are looking for a memorable evening out, Calgary’s JAROblue is a must. Owners Jared Seirfrit and Robin Lockhorst (the Ja and Ro of JARO) have successfully led the way in providing locals with a tapas style dining experience our city has fully embraced.

If you haven’t been yet, go. Enough said. The great thing about tapas is the interactive nature – though, you’re sharing plates so you better like the people you’re eating with. But the best part is no set coursing etiquette. Still hungry after a couple plates? Order some more.

Chef Colin Penttinen’s passion for creating smaller dishes aligns perfectly with the tapas style theme the restaurant is so famously known for.

“Giving people smaller portions lets them really think about what it is they are eating.”

Of course any good meal requires good wine and JAROblue’s wine list is sure to please anyone. The team has thoughtfully stocked their wine cellar creating the perfect balance between taste and price.

The staff is charming, a little quirky, and they understand the food. If you don’t know what to order ask, or better yet, go for the sharing platter: a combination of staple dishes and daily specials created to surprise even the most avid foodie. Past items include braised kangaroo, cured cow tongue, and fois gras foam.

JAROblue’s warm décor of the space itself hints to a retro basement while still remaining elegant. The room has several seating options including small dining tables, couches and coffee tables (they work) and of course, the always entertaining bar. The tables are closely positioned and you will often see multiple groups sharing the couches. So be ready to rub shoulders with other diners, there is a good chance you will all be friends by the end of the first round of martinis.

Given its size and ambiance (or perhaps as a result) the room is often packed with an eclectic and well-dressed collection of young professionals and established businesspeople, couples, and groups.

Whether you are in for the full event or you simply want to share a bottle of wine and a small bite, JAROblue is definitely one of the best spots for a night out in Calgary. JAROblue, 1314 – 17 Avenue SW, Calgary, 403-237-5276.
