Notable Now Vancouver: October 4, 2013

Just Opened: Bismark (526 Abbott Street)
Concert and game-goers can delight at the news that Crosstown has a new spot to grab your pre and post-game fix within easy walking distance to the major sport arenas. Aiming to be a go-to for locals in this emerging neighbourhood that straddles both Gastown and Chinatown, expect a menu that’s laden with comfort food fixings with a twist. Craft beer lovers can rejoice at the fact that there are about 20 different types to choose from alongside cocktails and a pretty solid selection of wine.

Art: Bobbies & Wieners (2206 Main Street)
Got your attention, did we? It’s true, there is such a show that has just landed in YVR and it takes an immature and cartoon-like look on the polar opposite of classy nude portraits and art. It’s exactly what you’d expect to stumble upon on the back door of a washroom stall, or crudely scrawled next to the mirror at some run-down trucker restaurant – compiled by local artists. This show is guaranteed to get you chuckling as you take in the explicit details.

Opening Soon: The Blackbird English Pub & Oyster Bar (905 Dunsmuir Street)
The latest addition to the Donnelly Group of Pubs has taken over the large corner spot that used to house The Keg (below Brandi’s) in the heart of downtown Vancouver’s CBD (Corner of Dunsmuir and Howe). Just in time for Thanksgiving, brew lovers can expect to find 25 or more craft beer on tap at this expansive 8,000-square foot space.  Spanning two levels, take in the scene from an ample wraparound bar or enjoy proper seated dining (with upscale settings); it’s got it all going on and more. Beyond the normal cultured pub fixings, The Blackbird will also feature a barbershop, shuffleboard, billiards room and more.

Touch (Friday, October 4th at 350 West Georgia St)
This Friday, the atrium at the Vancouver Public Library Foundation will transform into an oasis of cool as it plays host to TOUCH, a dynamic new annual fundraising event. An evening of entertainment and innovation with interactive technologies and installations, live performances from Humans and Lady Gaga’s DJ, signature cocktails, as well as an impressive silent auction selection is on order for the evening. Up for grabs: win an exclusive mentoring session from the VP of Pixar or even the Canucks Owner, as well as other influential types from Vancouver.

Fraser Valley Food Show (October 4-6th, 1190 Cornell Street)
Make the trek out to check out the 6th annual Fraser Valley Food Show this weekend as it kicks off with Oktoberfest, the 11th annual Master Chef Competitions, more than 100 different exhibitors sampling away their tasty fare, microbreweries pouring their goods and the 2nd annual Great Canadian Sausage Making Competition.  Partake in seminars, check out the Gluten-Free Expo, snack on Fraser Valley produced cheese, catch chef-led demonstrations and pick up the latest culinary tips and trends while you’re at it.

Eco Fashion Week (800 Robson Street)
Celebrating its sixth stylish season, Vancouver’s Eco Fashion Week is back to celebrate fashionably eco-chic designs with a sustainable sense. There will be designers from across Canada and beyond with a plethora of diverse and inspiring shows taking place starting this weekend. Throughout the week-long showcase (starting October 6th), designers must present their latest collections, which require that they adhere to the strict green guidelines. Be sure to clear your schedule for a few post-show after parties (they are aplenty). Find all the details here.
