Notable Now Calgary: October 10, 2014

Be Dapper
Men, don’t you get sick from hearing women go on about fall fashion? It’s time that you took part in the fun of seasonal shopping, and now that Modern Menswear on 4th Street SW has opened, you can do just that. This is Calgary’s newest menswear boutique with only the snazziest of fashion from home and abroad and chances are good you’ll find your favourite new pieces here. If you have some free time in the next few weeks, sashay over to Mission and get yourself some new duds (2500 4th Street SW).

Circque de Nuit
If you thought going to the Roadhouse was passé, we wouldn’t argue with you… but on October 17th Cirque Nuit is back with their four grand installment of funk, groovy beats and festival entertainment like acroyoga and silks that will make you rethink the venue. With the Dirty Gramophones and a collection of other gypsy funk DJs taking over the space, you’ll feel like you’ve joined a travelling caravan for the evening. Tickets are flying fast, so don’t wait.

Fall for East Village
Thanksgiving weekend should be all about relaxation, so here’s a great way to unwind. Take in the fall weather this Saturday with a walk through East Village (Calgary’s coolest new neighborhood) and experience some artisanal booths, a pop-up food truck scene, and a photo booth. You can also access the pumpkin patch on-site if you bring a food bank donation. Can you think of anything else you’d rather do this long weekend?

Halfy Hour
Ok, so maybe there’s one more thing we can think of that would be more fun than picking out your pumpkin and eating lunch on the East Village riverbank. Anejo is known for making a mean margarita, and their tequila shelf has pretty much the best selection of agave-based spirits in the entire city. Every day from 3 to 5pm you can take advantage of not only half-priced drinks, but also half-priced food. If you’re not into turkey this weekend, this is a great alternative.

Toast and Jam
Calgary is all about brunch – but how about a boozy brunch? Bespoke is hosting their first-ever Toast and Jam party on Sunday, October 26th from noon until 2pm and you’re invited. The bar will become a sensational space for you and your breakfast crew to sip on Veuve Clicquot bubbly while taking in a delicious meal prepared by Nicole Gourmet. After brunch, DJ Thomas H will be getting the party started with some club hits that will make for a memorable Sunday. Brunch tickets are $45 here.

Flashdance
Ah, the 80s… a time when big hair, Madonna and films like Flashdance reigned supreme. Starting November 18th you can relive the magic of that somewhat tacky but simultaneously awesome era because Flashdance the musical is hitting the Jubilee Auditorium. From director Sergio Trujillo (the man behind the musicals Jersey Boys and Memphis) comes a performance that’s jam-packed with lots of dance, pizzazz and classic hits like Maniac and I Love Rock and Roll. If you love films like Dirty Dancing or Footloose, you won’t want to miss out on this spectacle.
