Notable Now Calgary: July 4, 2014

By Two Wheels
The city’s best bike festival has been going strong for the last week and until July 6th you can take advantage of some really fun events happening. Learn how to tune up your bike at a maintenance session, take part in the daily two-wheel scavenger hunts, or join one of the bike gangs for a cruise around town. For anyone who wants to get more serious about biking, find some new routes, or meet new people, this is something to consider taking part in over the weekend.

Stampede Parade
The annual Stampede Parade takes place on July 4th to kick off the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, and if you are a true Calgarian you should really plan to be there. Everything kicks off at 8:55am, but plan to arrive a little early to secure a decent spot so you can see the floats, performers, riders and VIPs that will be making their way through the procession. This year’s Parade Marshall is William Shatner and Sochi heroes Junio Gilmore and Denny Morrison will also be participating. It Takes Balls
Here’s an unusual event happening on the first day of Stampede: Bottlescrew Bill’s is hosting a fundraiser for prostate cancer, but this isn’t going to be just any old fundraiser. Each pint is $100 but made special for you by the creative minds at Village Brewery. The Prairie Oyster Ale is made with actual Prairie oysters that have been cooked up and added to the beer ahead of time to add that special flavour. While you might think twice about sipping on this ale, it’s all going towards a really fantastic cause. If you’re feeling brave or just plain curious, you can join the party at 5pm.

Ardberg TracTOUR
If you like a good spirit or cocktail, like Scotch is the ultimate option. A nice glass of Scotch on the rocks or a smoky cocktail is totally sublime once you acquire a taste for it. Lucky for all you Scotch lovers, the Ardberg TracTOUR will be in Calgary on July 12th at the National on 10th Ave SW. From 3 to 7pm you can sample this famously peaty Scotch in a few crafty cocktails and check out the Ardberg tractor. RSVP to: katy@bondpr.ca

The Red Bull DJ Competition is Back
DJs from across the country will be battling it out this month to see who’s going to be representing Canada in Azerbaijan for the Red Bull Thre3 Style Finals. On July 20th, things are going to be heating up in Calgary when a series of talented Western DJs battle it out at the Commonwealth to see who will advance to the National round of this competition. It’ll be like seeing eight DJ shows in one with appearances from Smalltown DJs, Hedspin and Four Color Zack. This is worth being late for work on Monday. www.redbullthre3style.com

Time to Get Out Your Festival Tarp
The Folk Fest has another great line-up for 2014, and from July 24th to 27th Prince’s Island Park is going to be the best spot to hang out. Great Lake Swimmers, Rufus Wainwright and Chad VanGaalen are just a few of the great acts that will be gracing the stage this year. You’ll want to make the afternoon sessions that showcase different artists who come together for one-time collaborations. If you’re an aspiring musician you can also take advantage of the Folk Fest Boot Camps that give you the chance to learn chords, strings and songwriting with performers from this year’s line up.
