Notable Now Calgary: April 4, 2014

2014 Spanish Festival
The 2nd annual Spanish Festival runs until April 6th and this is your chance to celebrate the wonderful food, music, film and dance that originated in the most romantic country of them all. Over the next few days you can catch several demonstrations of flamenco, view acclaimed director Pedro Almodovar’s latest film, Los Amantes Pasajeros, which translates as “I’m So Excited,” at the Plaza Theatre, and enjoy an evening of dance, tapas and sangria at Brava Bistro. The Factory
On April 5th The Olds College Fashion Institute presents the Factory, which will showcase designs from this year’s fashion apparel and costume cutting students. Ania Basak of Fashion Calgary will host this year’s program and guest designer Jamie Block will also make an appearance. An after-party and a silent auction will follow the Factory show with proceeds going to Inn From The Cold. You can find the Factory on the second floor of the Bow Valley South campus. Tickets are $20 and the show runs from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Calgary has been getting a flurry of great acts travelling through recently and the fun doesn’t stop. On April 7th Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks will be playing new hits off their latest album, Wig Out At Jagbags, at the Republik. Most people know Malkmus best for his work with the very influential 90s indie rock group called Pavement, so die-hard fans will be happy to hear the Jicks have been known to perform one or two classics from the Pavement repertoire during their shows. Get your tickets here. SMTJ will be joined by special guests Speedy Oritz.

Calgary Underground Film Festival
The CUFF is excited to bring you another great year of films that you won’t see anywhere else. From April 7th to 13th, you’ll have a chance to see a brilliant selection of shorts, documentaries and dramas, meet the filmmakers, and there will even be a 48-hour filmmaking competition. Check out the website for all the details on show times and special events. Also of interest is the Found Footage Festival, which includes a screening of videos salvaged from garage sales, thrift stores and other random places. As they say, “One man’s junk, is a movie geek’s treasure”…

The Mountaintop
The Canadian premiere of The Mountaintop is playing at Theatre Calgary until the 20th of this month. Many people remember April 4th, 1968 as a sombre moment in history because this was the day that Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in the Lorraine Hotel of Memphis. This play depicts Dr. King’s final evening and the events that unfold when a young maid delivers a cup of coffee to room 306. You’ll be moved by this story that discusses human rights, justice and freedom.

You Scream, I Scream
It’s always risky to say anything about weather in Calgary with certainty, but spring might have actually arrived this week. With the local forecast calling for highs around +9 and +10, we all need to get outside and celebrate the end of winter months, which are hopefully now behind us. Dust off that 10-speed, grab your skateboard or stop into Village Ice Cream (431 10th Avenue SE) and enjoy a frozen treat on a sunny patio. If you decide to head for a cone, don’t overlook the toasted coconut or salted caramel options.
