Notable Neighbourhoods: Little India

Though we’ve noted SoMa (South Main Street) in past city posts as a go-to spot on our YP radar when looking for noteworthy spots for an after-work bite, we’ve yet to suggest venturing a bit further south toward YVR’s own Little India. It’s a lively trip worth taking.

This culturally-rich spans six blocks and is brimming with a variety of shops, cafes, tantalizingly good restaurants and colourful boutiques; you’re guaranteed to make a noteworthy discovery every few steps.

Get things off to a tasty start by checking out the recently opened Roots Cafe (6502 Main Street) and order yourself a creamy, piping hot and nicely spiced Chai latte. In the mood for something a little different? This cozy neighbourhood cafe offers up baked goods that go beyond, like perfectly spiced, crispy sausage rolls and even butter chicken poutine for a unique, Canadian twist.

Next, continue the culinary adventures by checking out Tandoori Delight Food located at 6692 Main Street for an authentic, colourful taste of Mumbai street food. Bite into a steaming samosa or nosh on a selection of flavourful curry and wash it down with a tangy lassi for total satisfaction.

Still hungry? Head over to Main Kabob Hut (219 49th Ave) and order up a portion or two of chicken tikka with warm Naan accompanied by a few ground beef seekh (skewers) with homemade chutney. This well-known and adored hole in the wall is definitely worth noting. Don’t expect any fancy service, just really amazing, no frills food to fill your belly.

Post-eating your way through India (a la South Main Street-style), walk it off with a trip to Bombay Bazaar (6636 Main Street) and peruse their collection of gifting goods. Score great deals on unique jewelry, candles, home accents and more.

Prior to heading home, be sure to stop by the Punjabi Food Center and load up on plenty of locally sourced and exotic fresh fruit and vegetables. This roomy market is abuzz with activity, making you feel (almost) transported abroad. Are your work-week meals in need of a little kick? Spice things up and choose from their wall of peppery blends. Take a self-guided culinary tour and explore it for yourself by visiting 6635 Main Street.
