Commonwealth Bar & Stage recently opened in Calgary (731 10th Ave. SW) and has become a hotspot for young professionals looking for a great night out.
The only venue in Calgary to feature two distinct floors of sound and a vintage fashion-forward aesthetic, this old renovated warehouse’s purpose is to deliver a good time with good music.
The concept came about through a shared passion for music by the owners, who are both acclaimed DJs and producers. The mid-sized nightclub has introduced creativity and discerning music to the standard nightclub model, playing everything from the newest club, hip hop and rock hits to dance, electro, and dubstep.
The spaces within Commonwealth have their own feel, giving you an opportunity to enjoy a diverse mix of music and people. Looking to bust a move on the dance floor? Stay upstairs because the beats are going hard all night long. Flanking the dance floor on opposite sides of the room are two lounge areas, so for those much needed breaks you can take advantage of the comfy seating.
If you are interested in something a little more relaxed, head downstairs to check out the intimate room in the basement. This space features a centre bar that commands attention. Holding court above the bar’s bottles is a leafless tree that a flock of taxidermy crows call home. The tables that line the walls are small enough that you can sit and chill with friends as you sip your cocktail and chat about the week’s successes.
Of course to toast such an evening you need a special cocktail and Commonwealth does not disappoint, offering an extensive list of bourbon drinks.
It’s pretty much guaranteed that at some point in the evening you may feel a little peckish. These guys have done it right when it comes to food. They’ve brought vendor street food indoors at their ‘cafeteria’. Working with the chefs behind ultra-popular Una Pizza and Wine, Commonwealth has developed a dinner menu that’s their own take on high-end street food. Think gourmet taquitos and AAA Alberta skirt steak skewers.
