Facebook Proves That the Lonely Cat Lady Stereotype is Totally Accurate

You could say that there are only two types of people in this world: cat people and dog people.

Cat people are loners, probably single, and don’t care if they have a pet that’s indifferent to them and will likely eat their face when they die.

Dog people are outgoing and sociable, and while a cat person may feel a bit overwhelmed by Spot’s unconditional love and unbridled energy, dog people live for it.

While you may think these are just silly stereotypes, according to new research from Facebook, there may be more truth to them than you think.

The company studied 160,000 Facebook profiles in the U.S. and drew some interesting conclusions.

Cat people are more likely to be single than dog people. They also tend to have fewer friends.

According to the study, 36% of cat owners were single, compared to just 24% of dog people. Dog owners had, on average, 26 more friends than people who shared pictures of cats.

Additionally, both parties tended to stick to their own kind. Cat people were 2.2 times more likely to be friends with other cat lovers than people from the general population.

Cat owners also tend to live in urban areas, while you’re more likely to find dog owners in rural locations. In line with that, dog people also preferred outdoor activities a lot more than their feline-loving counterparts.

Lastly, Facebook suggests that cat owners are moodier than dog owners and have much darker taste in movies.

Basically, cat people would pick a dystopian thriller like A Clockwork Orange over a sappy Nicholas Sparks rom-com any day.

As a certified member of #TeamFeline (minus the whole owning a cat part), I must say these results are pretty on point. But regardless of which camp you fall into, it’s cool to see that there really is a kernel of truth behind these long-lasting stereotypes.
