Dalton Jackson: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is sneakerhead Dalton Jackson, who’s built two successful businesses around his passion for sneakers with world domination on the horizon. We caught up with him to find out what fuels his work ethic and how other young professionals can apply his advice to take their career to the next level…

WORK

Describe what you do in less than 140 characters. Go.
I’m the founder of The Sole Exchange Canada and created Canada’s number one sneaker trade show, The Ultimate Sneaker Show.

What was the inspiration for your career route?
I always wanted to do it my way. I was working as a manager while still trying to find my own path. When the company went bankrupt, I took it as a sign that there were other opportunities waiting for me. I am very passionate about sneakers, the culture, and wanted to create a platform for other enthusiasts. My passion led me to going the entrepreneurial route and creating The Ultimate Sneaker Show.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career so far?
My most memorable moment was pulling off a successful Ultimate Sneaker Show in a new market, Montreal. It was my first time organizing something in a different city and the experience was challenging and rewarding.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?
In five years, I see myself as a top figure in the sneaker world. In 10 years, I’d like to have my own sneaker deal. In 20 years, I see myself relaxing with my family and taking trips around the world.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
My advice would be: don’t procrastinate and take advantage of every moment and every opportunity.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is it (or they) important to you?
I’m a big supporter of the March of Dimes. I think the work that they do in the community to provide service and support to people with physical disabilities is very important.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
Overcoming my competitive spirit has been a big challenge for me. Realizing that relationship-building is more important helped me overcome it. My team was instrumental in helping me realize that.

What does the word notable mean to you?
“Notable” to me means standing out and being a leader. Definitely someone to be on the lookout for because they’re always doing amazing things.

PLAY

Where is your favourite place to wine/ dine in your city and why?
My favourite place is The Keg because the steak is always perfect and I love the vibe there.

What’s the most visited website on your Internet browser? The most played song on your phone?
My most visited site is YouTube. And the most played song is Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.”

Who’s one person you think everyone should be following on social media?
@iamcardib because she is hilarious.

What’s your favourite country to visit and why? And what’s the next one you plan on travelling to?
I’ve only been in Jamaica and Canada so they’re both my faves. Currently, I’m planning trips to the Bahamas and England.

What gives you the greatest FOMO?
Whenever I see Celine Dion on stage in Vegas, I feel like I should be there.

What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Going out for dinner.

What’s something you wish you didn’t spend so much money on? What’s something you wish you spent more on?
I wish I didn’t spend so much on fine dining. Something I want to spend more on is taking vacations and exploring new places.

And finally, what does success look like to you? Work, play, or otherwise…
Success to me is enjoying what you do, enjoying the people around you, and being in constant pursuit of your goals.
