Andrew St. Royal: Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur

Today’s Notable Young Entrepreneur is entertainment pro Andrew St. Royal, who owns two companies specializing in everything from premium private events to audiovisual production. Here’s what inspired his career and what advice he would share with other young professionals…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
I own and run St. Royal Entertainment, which provides high-quality live music, DJs and entertainment for private events. I also co-own an audiovisual production company, St. Royal Production, with my partner Mike Walther. We take care of the staging, lighting, sound systems and décor elements for special events.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
In 2010 I was living in Australia as a teacher and running and performing in a funk band on the side. I was frustrated because even though my lifestyle was good, I was unable to financially get ahead. I knew I wanted to create something and run it on my terms, to my taste level, with the ability to grow and achieve financial success.

I did some research into Toronto’s event entertainment offerings and saw the opportunity. I felt there was a space in the market for a band like The St. Royals so I hit the ground running and never looked back.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
I enjoy shaping and growing the businesses because it is so creative. Thinking big picture and directing the trajectory of my companies is for sure one of the best things. As a musician, I love that I get to immerse myself in music all the time. Managing the ever-growing St. Royals family of talented artists and performers is the most challenging.

What is one sign that you’ve seen over the years to suggest that your work/life balance is off?
I haven’t booked a vacation in over a year, so maybe it’s time to do that!

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I have so many ideas that I’m currently exploring. I definitely want to see St. Royal Entertainment expand into new industries and regions.

What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome in your career? How did you overcome it?
One of the most challenging parts of business is pricing and valuing our services. I’ve overcome it by doing as much market research as possible, figuring out where I want to position myself in the market, and making sure our level of service is top notch.

What does success look like to you? Does Money = Happiness?
Success for me is the feeling I get from turning my vision into reality.

No, I don’t think money equals happiness. Money is an important part of the equation but placing too much importance on money would probably dilute your happiness.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
When I look back at how quickly St. Royal Entertainment has grown it really feels like one continuous moment. Two important events for me are organizing our first big event that also coincided with the launch the St. Royals Superband two years ago, and a rebrand of the entire company that we completed at the end of last year.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
General advice is tough to give, but I guess I’d say do whatever you’re doing with authenticity and integrity – at all times. These traits are innately valued by everyone – especially your customers – and they are impossible to fake.

Where is your favourite place to wine/ dine in your city and why?
The best place to wine and dine for me is a blanket in the grass at Marilyn Bell Park by the lake, or Trinity Bellwoods. In the colder months I like King West spots like Lee and Buca. To be honest, brunch really is is my favourite, I love Mildred’s Temple Kitchen and Portland Variety.

When you’re not working how do you love to spend your “Me” time?
Performing in the Superband, while technically can be considered ‘work’, is really play time for me. I rarely perform on stage with the bands anymore so when the big shows come around I get very excited to play. I recently got into sailing so during the warmer months I crew on a small race team, and I’m also taking sailing courses to get certified to charter big sail boats.

My day-to-day ‘me’ time includes things I like going to the gym, practicing yoga, reading, taking rides on my motorcycle in the summer, and of course listening to music and checking out live shows.

Where is your favourite place to travel? Why?
Anywhere new. There’s nothing like the excitement of seeing a new place and experiencing a new culture for the first time.

If you had to choose a theme song, what would it be?
Music is an integral part of my life and businesses, so to me this is an ever-changing song. These days I’m enjoying D’Angelo’s new album and live James Brown albums from the late 60s and early 70s.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing, what would you be doing?
I can’t even imagine. I honestly feel like I’m in the exact right place for me right now.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
We make a point to offer our services to various charities and causes throughout the year. I’m always looking for opportunities to get involved in Toronto’s community events. In 2013 we launched the Superband with a successful charity fundraiser for CP24 Chum Christmas Wish – that was a standout moment for sure.

What to you is notable?
All the entrepreneurs and trailblazers who are making their dreams a reality and anyone dedicated to making a difference in their community.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone. For better or worse I’m inextricably tied to Apple devices.
