Your Complete Snowed in Bucket List for Winter 2014/15

Old Man Winter called pretty early this year for most of Canada.

What a scrooge.

You’ve probably already cursed him for preventing you from making an event or two, but we promise – he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

And while we’ve already tried to lift your spirits by giving you reasons to be excited for snow, it’s time to take it a step further. We’re going to get you started on a list of activities for when you’re inevitably snowed in that will make you more efficient, organized, entertained, and all-around awesome.

And because this is a family affair, we encourage you to add your own ideas in the comments.

Research Your Dream Trip
Stop being jealous of your Facebook friends’ vacay photos and take the time to plan one for yourself. You’ve earned it.

Clean Up Your Online Presence
Don’t think of it as vain, think of it as good business. Googling yourself once in a while can keep you from awkward situations in the future when that MySpace photo from eight years ago surfaces and a would-be boss sees you passed out on the toilet.

Play games

We’ve got you covered.

Get Creative with Cocktails
If you’re lucky enough to have someone trapped there with you, challenge each other to a cocktail creation contest. And then challenge them again. And again.

Catch Up on House of Cards/Game of Thrones/Downton Abbey/Insert your Guilty Pleasure Here
This will probably be your most natural temptation, so for once, give in.

Treat Yo’ Self
No matter your gender, a mani/pedi/hair treatment/ good facial mask will make your feel like new, and a give you that boost of confidence for when you finally resurface from your dwelling.

Find Your Dream Job/Update Your Resume
As much as you may love your current employment situation, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be looking ahead to what’s next. Knowing what’s out there is the first step, so why not invest in future satisfaction while you have a moment away from your desk?

Discover How to Make a Crowd Pleaser
Winter is dinner party season. Giving a new dish a trial run is never a bad idea before serving it up to your discerning friends.

Learn Something Domestic
Missing buttons on a vintage jacket? Learn how to sew them. Pregnant sister? Knit that baby a lopsided scarf. YouTube and Pinterest will show you the way.

Optimize Your Vehicle
Check your oil, clean out your glove compartment, and most importantly, stock it with a winter emergency kit (blanket, candle, etc.). Safety first.

Sweat
Make use of those workout apps you downloaded but never use, or scour YouTube for instructional videos. There’s some quality (and hilarious) stuff out there, so take advantage.

Garden
We know, we know, it’s too cold to grow things. But the herb gardens some people have in their kitchens don’t know that. It’s a win-win: defying winter while growing fresh basil.

Make Friends with Your Neighbours
We don’t borrow sugar like they did in the old days, so why not just knock on the door and say hi. Even if you don’t hit it off, at least you know who’s sleeping a few feet from you. Pro tip: bring beer or wine.

Make Your Own Ugly Christmas Sweater
Skip the panicked trip to Value Village on your way to that house party and get your costume ready now.

Binge Read
Even if it’s just a fancy magazine, sometimes there’s nothing more cathartic than turning crisp (or weathered) pages.

Call Your Family
An unexpected call will make Grandma’s day, we’re sure of it.

Be a Snow Angel
If there are actually driveways in your neighbourhood, why not shovel some for the seniors two doors down or the couple on vacation across the street. It’s a nice gesture and an even nicer workout.

Get Generous
Every year around this time, you intend on finding a worthy charity to help out with for the Holidays, but somehow there’s never time. Now you have no excuses.

Get a Head Start on Christmas Shopping
Etsy, eBay, NFL.com, here you come.

Optimize Your Sleep Space
That shelf you’ve been meaning to put up since last summer is calling your name, as is your closet. Face it now, you’ll thank yourself later.

Get Creative
Dust off the old guitar/paint brushes/journal you neglect when life’s too busy. There was a reason you picked them up in the first place, so tap into your inner-artist and remind yourself why.

Get Lost Life Hacking
You actually have time to try them now.

Sleep
Maybe the most obvious of them all, but studies pop up all the time telling us that we don’t do it enough. Perhaps actually getting the right amount (seven to nine hours) for once will convince you to go to bed earlier even when the warm weather comes back.
