You Can Buy a Detached Home in Vancouver for $20,000

At a time when the price of housing in Vancouver couldn’t be higher, you can now purchase a standalone home in the city for $20,000 on Craigslist.

Seriously.

In one of the best uses of space I’ve seen in a long time, the teeny tiny 250-square foot studio is complete with a full-size kitchen with a Miele stove, a loft bed, a 46-inch TV, a washer and dryer, and more. It was converted from a garage/workshop, according to The Province.

The home makes an attractive option for those who are looking to call themselves homeowners, and who can function in minimal space. By minimal space, I mean a total footprint of 12′ x 24.’

The only problem: it’s illegal on its current site and has to be moved out of town.

Apparently the dwelling is simply too small. Vancouver by-laws state dwelling units can be no smaller than 398 square feet, but laneway houses are allowed to be a minimum of 280 square feet.

The owner, 39-year-old Ches Lam, is offering to arrange for the move and to set up foundation at its new site. The owner will need to pay for the home and the associated logistics, according to The Province.

“It’s a very solid structure — it should last another 100 years,” Lam told the publication. “It’s kind of small, but the space is well used. It’s just not totally legal in Vancouver.”

But just because it isn’t legal in Vancouver doesn’t mean it won’t make a legal little vacation escape elsewhere in the province, right?

According to the Craigslist posting, the home is available to a new buyer as of Jan. 9, 2016.

Any takers?
