Simon Bertrand believes in the concept of building a better world one product at the time, something he’s looking to do with his natural, organic, fair trade teas sold under the RISE Kombucha name. What was the inspiration for his career route? Find out in today’s YEDaily…
Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
My job is to develop business opportunities for RISE Kombucha and to lead a team that creates better products all the time and markets them in an intelligent way. We want RISE Kombucha to be an active and positive corporate citizen that will help build a better, cleaner, healthier and more efficient society.
Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
One of my best friends is one of the two founders of Crudessence, a raw food business in Montreal. I joined them to run the Kombucha operations in early 2008. In Jan 2009 I teamed up with them and other partners to create Crudessence Kombucha inc, makers of RISE Kombucha.
Kombucha tea is a product I wanted to work with even before I knew it existed, if that makes any sense. I dreamed of a natural, organic, fair trade beverage that would be a digestive aid. Kombucha is full of enzymes, heathy bacteria, antioxidants and can be formulated in a endless different flavours using medicinal plants and teas. It was my dream come true! I was always a strong believer in natural medicine and I saw a huge opportunity to bring a great product to market when I discovered Kombucha. I like to believe we can build a better world one product at the time.
What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best thing I do on a daily basis is working with passionate and committed individuals who work consciously on improving themselves through our common goals and work ethic around RISE Kombucha and Crudessence.
The most challenging part is to take care of all the details, the level of responsibility and demands I handle. I often need peaceful time alone and some silence at the end of the day to balance it out.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
So much can happen in five 5 years, it’s hard to tell. One thing for sure is that I will still be working on meaningful projects, taking care of my health with good foods and physical activities, spending quality time with my family and continuing to learn and evolve.
What does success look like to you?
It looks like a peaceful and fulfilled human being. Actually, it looks like a community of peaceful and fulfilled human beings, thriving together.
What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
The most memorable milestone of my career is probably when I was named president of the company two years ago. My job hadn’t really changed from the one of general manager but at that point I felt I had proven to the partners and investors they could trust me as the leader of our Kombucha business.
Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Something that worked very well for me was to create clear intentions, follow my intuitions and adjust my everyday decisions accordingly. If interested, I highly recommend meditation to broaden your perspective on life and the goals you want to achieve.
Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
Through RISE Kombucha we support many organizations that we believe in. Everything that supports social justice, clean environment and healthy living is on our radar for a possible partnership or to support. We love to share our drinks and sponsor events with these amazing community partners.
What to you is notable?
Notable is a network for young professionals and a database for cool and trendy events, venues, information and more.
Notable is people who RISE to their potential and go for it!
Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
Android. 100%. Flexible, open source, functional, nice apps… I have a love/hate relationship with my phone though, sometimes I miss the time when I had no cell phone…Ahhhh, progress.
