YEDaily: Robyn Hardy and Lorraine Pond

In a combination of Robyn Hardy’s education background and Lorraine Pond’s exercise science background, together they created Bobs & Lolo, fun singing characters that teach children through music, one of the most effective learning tools, in today’s YEDaily…

Describe your job in a nutshell.
Bobs & LoLo are dedicated to connecting children to the natural world with music, movement and make-believe. Using a variety of media platforms, we teach kids to care about themselves, their neighbours and the planet.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
Bobolo Productions was created in 2004 to serve as the creative force and management company behind award-winning, children’s entertainers, Bobs & LoLo. Our inspiration was actually based on a long-time friendship and shared childhood experiences in the arts and outdoor recreation. Post-university, a mutual interest in working with children and an understanding about the value of using music as a teaching tool led to the creation of Bobs & LoLo – a multi-faceted children’s entertainment brand.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The performer and educator sides of us love the direct interaction we have with our audience – this includes live shows and all of our social media networks. Knowing that children and families across Canada are connecting with our music and the stories/messaging we share is incredibly rewarding!

The most challenging part of our jobs is managing the constant influx of new projects and finding balance with the demands of our touring schedule, strategic growth of the company and family life.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Still singing and dancing, hopefully with kids from all over the world!

What does success look like to you?
Finding that elusive trifecta of balance for the touring schedule, continued growth of the company and family life.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
In 2009 our music videos began airing nationally on the children’s preschool network, Treehouse TV (Corus Entertainment). The regular broadcast time has been integral in allowing us to introduce our music and programming to families across the country. In addition, two of our four albums have received JUNO award nominations for Children’s Album of the Year, alongside other critical acclaim from the Parents’ Choice Foundation, family media and early childhood educators.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, find something that you are truly passionate about. The hard work and long hours will be much more enjoyable!

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
Our first live performance (2003) was at a special event for the BC Children’s Hospital. We have since retained a close relationship with the organization and regularly offer our support via participation in special events and/or lend our support to various fundraising campaigns. We have a soft spot for any non-profit group that works with children as well as conservation-based organizations.
