Elevator Pitch: Describe your business in a nutshell.
DDG (Deluxe Design Group) is a Calgary based production boutique. We are a small, specialized team of broadcast artists dedicated to creativity over commerce. We work on a diverse range of projects including Films, Corporate Films, Documentaries and Music Videos.

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
My business partner and I started ddg after realizing our common vision and a desire to do things differently in a changing industry. I always knew I wanted to work for myself and the timing was right to start my own business.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
Every day is different – so it is very refreshing to come to work and be creative. Technology is also changing so fast that it is an exciting time to be doing what we’re doing. It’s a constant evolutionary process.

Where do you see your business going in 5 years?
The future applications of video content are expanding rapidly. We’re looking forward to the new ways video is going to be consumed. We don’t ever want to expand into a large factory shop of 50+ employees producing quantity over quality. Instead we’d prefer to remain small and specialized. We are a collective – we work with many different artists with specific skills.

What does success look like to you?
Doing what I love and am passionate about and the ability to be creative and make a living at it. Happiness is more important than money.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
Last year we received 6 AMPIA nominations and walked away with a win for Best Digital Program or Project. It was our first time being nominated.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Keep pushing forward no matter what anyone says. Follow your instincts and your passion.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
We have worked with KidSport, Kids Cancer Care and the United Way. We donate a portion of our services to these great foundations. We also work with non-profit groups promoting the arts like Honens. We believe in the importance of giving back to the community and promoting positive change.

What is Notable to you?
My industry peers who keep pushing the envelope. At times it makes me want to give up and quit but I also appreciate the inspiration it gives me.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone.

How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
Living in Calgary allows for a great range of activities. I snowboard in the winter and find it very good for the soul to get away from the city and be in the mountains. In the summer I golf and bike.
