YEDaily: Lauren McLachlan

Lauren McLachlan is the designer behind fine sweater line Valentine K, which has been featured on Fashion Television and carried across several retail outlets in Canada. What does success look like for her? Find out in today’s YEDaily…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your business in a nutshell.
My line is strictly sweaters; cashmere and suede elbow patches. I wanted to focus on mastering the sweater and using only the highest of quality in doing so.

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
I was working in the fashion industry as a buyer and always searching for the perfect line of sweaters. I was inspired to take on the challenge myself of creating one.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
Best part would be working with the stores that carry my lines. I have great relationships with the store owners and I love everything from our buying appointments to just stopping by and checking on the line! Hardest part is working with manufacturers due to time zones and language barriers.

Where do you see your business going in 5 years?
I would like to still be making sweaters for women as well as I would like to start a men’s sweater line.

What does success look like to you?
It looks like longevity, happiness, and enjoyment.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
Having Fashion Television film a segment for their show on me and my line.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
If you want to start your own business, be prepared for a lot of work! But it’s worth it to have something that is your own.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I support many animal shelters, such as the Toronto Humane Society, because I am an animal lover.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone

How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
I run and walk with my dog, as well as workout three times a week! I also love a good kickboxing class.
