YEDaily: Janna Zittrer

Janna Zittrer’s business idea sprang up naturally one day when two young women asked her for store recommendations on Montreal’s Sainte-Catherine Street. Find out how she helps tourists and locals alike discover the best Montreal-based designers, brands and boutiques in today’s YPDaily…

Elevator Pitch: Describe your job in a nutshell.
My goal is to help tourists and locals discover the best Montreal-based designers, brands and boutiques. When I inspire clients to try something new and develop a more confident self-image while doing so, I consider that a job well done.

Why did you start working at your company? What was the inspiration for this career route?
In December 2011, two young women stopped me on Sainte-Catherine Street for store recommendations, and after sharing a few hidden gems, I was struck with the idea for Montreal Shopping Tours. When I discovered nothing like it existed, I knew I had to be the one to do it.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best and most challenging parts are the same: making people happy.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
A little more than a year ago, I had no idea I’d be running Montreal Shopping Tours. In 5 years, I could be the CEO of a global shopping-tour network or the editor-in-chief of a magazine, but to be honest, I don’t know exactly where I’ll be – and I find that really exciting.

YP

What does success look like to you?
Loving what you do, and having enough money to eat and pay the rent, too.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
It’s hard to pinpoint one particular milestone, but my first official Montreal Shopping Tour is definitely up there.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Seek out mentors and be open to feedback. The most successful people are the ones who never stop striving to do better.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I’m drawn to organizations that seek to empower women, especially young women who weren’t born with the same opportunities or freedoms as I was, such as Because I am a Girl and A Thousand Sisters. And despite my irrational fear of sharks and diving, the preservation of our oceans is also of particular importance to me.

What to you is notable?
Authenticity. Work with what you know and take the time to learn what you don’t.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone (though as a Canadian, I do wish I could still root for RIM).
