Elevator Pitch: Describe your business in a nutshell.
Canada Pooch is a pet apparel designer that specializes in high quality functional pet outerwear and is the first dog brand you will actually remember! Our products are adorable, but it is the craftsmanship and functionality that sets them apart. We truly love animals, and strive to develop innovative, forward-thinking products that guarantee a positive experience for dogs and owners alike.

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
My background is in accounting, but I have always loved animals. A couple of years ago, I adopted a puggle named Bella. After several unsuccessful shopping trips for her, I felt there was a need for a great new brand of functional pet apparel. I wanted to create pet apparel that was held to the same standard as human clothing because, after all, our pets are our children!

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best and most challenging part of my day is product development. I love seeing concepts go from ideas, to sketches, to samples, to the final product. The challenging part of product development is getting to the exact look and functionality that I envisioned. It generally takes many, many revisions to arrive at the final product.

The best part is getting great feedback from pet owners. I work very hard to make great products, so it is rewarding to know that people love and appreciate them.

Where do you see your business going in 5 years?
Our ambition is for Canada Pooch to be the most recognized name in Canadian pet accessories. We hope to be selling into international markets within the next couple of years as well as producing a much wider range of products, including leashes, harnesses, collars, beds etc. We have a lot of great new products in the pipeline.

What does success look like to you?
Building a sustainable business that makes outstanding products. Building a brand that people trust and feel loyalty towards. Supporting causes that you believe in which, in my case, are animal rescue and animal welfare initiatives.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
My most memorable milestone was the launch of our winter line in Canada last year. It was Canada Pooch’s debut in the market, and our first season was very successful. Pet parents were so excited about the brand – I couldn’t have hoped for a better start.

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
We support several animal charities and rescues by donating product to be used as prizes in raffles and auctions to raise money for their causes. We also donate our samples for use at animal shelters. My dog Bella is a puppy mill rescue and she had a very tough start to life. All the forgotten shelter pets deserve loving homes, and I feel compelled to help in any way I can.

What is Notable to you?
At the risk of sounding completely unoriginal – Steve Jobs. He was so fiercely committed to the originality and quality of his products.

Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
iPhone!

How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
A lot of walking. No matter how busy I am, I take a break at 5:30 for a walk with Bella.
