Thirty-four-year-old Greg Witz, President of Witz Education, ignites the future of an array of clients by providing tools and training in technology, leadership and management to help influential organizations develop their culture.
At Witz Education, we are broken into two distinct groups. The first being Apple Certified Training, Adobe Certified Training, Pro Video, Pro Audio, Pro Photography, Mac OS X, and Applecare courses. The second group, which was founded by Paul Witz (my father), we develop and deliver leadership and management courses, executive coaching, custom training, generation training, and keynote presentations based upon behavioural competencies. We help organizations develop their culture. In other words, if you are going to deal with other people, know how to deal with them! We want to help you “Ignite Your Future”.
Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
Witz Education was originally the Personal Development Institute, which was started by Paul Witz. After being involved in the company for several years, the opportunity to become an Apple Authorized Training Centre arose. Having just bought my first iPod and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, I started Witz Apple Certified Training. I figured we would be successful because of my experience in the training industry and my personal interest in video, photography, music, and pretty much anything Mac. In 2011, we merged the two sides into one powerful organization called Witz Education.
What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part of what I do is the people I get to work with. I get to hang out with cool people: artists, musicians, DJ’s, and video guys. I also get to train a wide variety of industries such as pharmaceutical, manufacturing, health care and government. Having the wicked team in the office that I get to collaborate, share knowledge & experiences, lead, and grow with is definitely a privilege. The biggest challenge is keeping up with the ideas. In other words, sometimes we have some great ideas but don’t have the time or resources to get them done. The challenge comes in managing the growth of the company while not losing the quality of the training.
Where do you see your business going in 5 years?
I see our business continually growing, expanding into the US market and being the number one place for companies and individuals to ignite their future.
What does success look like to you?
Success is being able to wake up every morning and enjoy what you do while getting paid to do it. It’s being able to continually grow as an individual and as a company, having opportunities that are new and different than the opportunities from yesterday.
Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Yes! Success today is defined by your ability to be tenacious and driven. We live in a relationship economy so it’s not only about being good at what you do, but also being able to collaborate with others without letting your ego or agenda get in the way. You’re young enough to make mistakes so take the risks and chances.
Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I don’t support any one charity, but having recently lost my father to cancer, I support any charity that works to finding a cure. Being a huge animal lover, I also support organizations like WWF and the SPCA.
What is Notable to you?
Being Notable to me means knowing where your strengths and skill gaps lie and being accountable to address those skill gaps be either learning and by being confident enough to surround yourself by people that are better than you, both professionally and personally. Don’t be a close-minded asshole.
Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
What are blackberries and Android? iPhone all the way!
How do you keep active, energetic, and vibrant?
I do my best to maintain a healthy work-life balance, with the help of a lot of coffee! I work out with a personal trainer, find time to decompress, and get the occasional massage. It helps that my personality is a very energetic type A personality. There is no time for rest, there’s too much to do!
