YEDaily: Cory James

A very wise man once said, “those who think they have no time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness”. Edward Stanley, the Earl of Derby, lived in the 19th century but his words have lost none of their significance in our modern world today. His words have held personal significance to Cory James, lifestyle entrepreneur, and the founder of Tranquil Therapeutic Solutions, in today’s YEDaily…

Why did you start your business, what was the inspiration?
I started my business because I saw a gap in my community for a comprehensive clinic. My vision was to create a serene, multi-disciplinary centre dedicated to setting a new standard for health and wellness. By combining wellness strategies that address holistic benefit, Tranquil addresses all elements critical to overall physical health and emotional well being.

Inspiration: My father. Early 2007 I lost my father to cancer and I came to the realization it was time to make some changes if I were to become the man I wanted to be. Following my fathers’ passing and a series of events, I began to live without perceived limitations. With my natural drive and ambition I started to develop the skills I needed to take my visions to the next level, and I began to convert my ideas to reality. Since, I have been involved in founding a number of companies and continue to expand my team and portfolio.

What is the best part of what you do on a day-to-day basis? The most challenging part?
The best part of what I do on a day-to-day basis is connecting with like-minds through networking with individuals and business owners in the community. I love the transitional effect networking has, as the more people I can connect with, the more people my team of healthcare professionals are able to help. The most challenging part of what I do on a day-to-day basis is trying to find 48 hours in a 24-hour day.

Where do you see your business going in 5 years?
In five years from now I see my business continuing to expand with more locations, more healthcare professionals, and more services offered. I would like to continue to provide opportunities to other entrepreneurs through active partnerships and franchising.

What does success look like to you?
When I think of what success looks like to me I think of time not money. I believe success in my life will be the ability to continue to create time for others and continue to feel as passionate and happy about all my endeavors.

What is the most memorable milestone in your career?
The most memorable milestone in my career was opening a second clinic in under a year of being in business.

Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
“Knowing what you want to do is only half the battle. You must be tenacious in the pursuit of your goals not allowing any obstacles to get in your way of achieving them.” My Father (Willie C. James)

Do you support any charities? If so, which one(s) and why is that important to you?
I serve on the Board of Directors of Bracelet of Hope. A Guelph-based non-profit organization that engages Canadians in the fight against HIV and AIDS in Lesotho Africa, Lesotho is a small country of two million people in south Africa where almost one in four citizens is infected with the virus as over 100,000 children have been left parentless. With the support of Guelph citizens and businesses, Bracelet of Hope has been able to raise over one million dollars.

I also support an organization called Dunara Homes for Recovery. Dunara provides a unique variety of recovery oriented programs that assist individuals in need of mental health support through short term, long term, residential, crisis and community programs. I devote on average 20 hours a week to provide personal support and assistance to individuals at Dunara to improve on the individual’s strengths, skills, and the achievement of personal goals.

It is important to me to support charities and organizations because I believe it is important to give back to my community, I believe it is my responsibility to do what I can to make the world a better place, and I believe helping people creates a positive ripple affect on so many levels. I believe life is about helping people and touching as many lives as you can, and I am humbled and truly grateful to be in a position where I am able to do so.

What is Notable to you?
Being Notable is about enjoying the adventure along the way. Young people making a difference. That’s Notable.

Notable: Blackberry, iPhone, Android, or Other?
I use the iPhone. From the office to the gym I prefer an iPhone because it is multifunctional and extremely user friendly.

How do you keep active energetic and vibrant?
I keep active energetic and vibrant by being extremely health conscious, participating in sports and continuously learning how to achieve better health and fitness. I work out five days a week, I train for half-marathons and run at least two half-marathons a year. I think surrounding myself with a lot of positive people and creative minds is where a lot of my energy comes from. Although I believe my secret is trying to keep up with my nephews. You can learn a lot from kids, and the ability to slow down to enjoy the little things in life is one of them. They are an amazing reminder of this and being around them keeps me grounded and vibrant.
