Year in Review: Biggest Pop Culture Moments of 2015

With 2015 drawing to a close, it’s time to look back at the year’s biggest moments in pop culture.

This year we saw the return of Adele, one of the biggest movie openings of all time, a change in Canadian politics, and continued evidence of the power of celebrity in American politics.

So without further ado, here are the biggest moments in pop culture that impacted our lives.

Viral Dress Debacle:
Was the dress blue and black or white and gold? Or could there just be something seriously wrong with our eyes? #TheDress divided the world as no one could agree on what they saw.

Super Bowl Sharks:
During the 2015 Super Bowl halftime performance, Katy Perry performed with some pretty interesting backup dancing sharks. The right shark really had it together, while the shark on the left could not keep it together, resulting in the world sharing their pity for the sad shark with the hashtag #LeftShark.

Josh Duggar:
Family values spokesperson, devout Christian and “19 Kids and Counting” star Josh Duggar gets busted for adultery.

Caitlyn Jenner:
The former Olympian and husband of reality star Kris Jenner completed his transformation into womanhood as he debuted his new body and new name in a super secret cover photo shot by Annie Liebovitz in June’s issue of Vanity Fair. The unveiling of the new Caitlyn Jenner was a turning point for the transgender community and resulted in Caitlyn being named Glamour’s Woman of the Year.

The Return of Adele:
British pop sensation Adele ended her four-year hiatus and had an epic comeback after launching her album “25,” which sold more than three million copies in just a week. Adele’s triumphant return also resulted in a worldwide tour that left many fans devastated as all shows sold out in minutes.

Kanye for President:
During the MTV Video Music Awards, Mr. West made a very interesting 12-minute speech while accepting the VMA Vanguard Award where he announced that he was going to run for president in 2020. Isn’t Donald Trump obnoxious enough?

Justin Bieber’s Music Revival:
In 2015, Justin Bieber made a huge shift in his music, which altered his fan base from 13-year-old girls to grown men with club-banging hits like “Where Are U Now,” “Sorry,” and “What Do You Mean?”

Star Wars Mania:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theatres on December 18th but the movie was already the biggest movie of the year by then, selling well over $100 million in advance tickets.

Drake Making Headlines:
Canadian rapper Drake was constantly making headlines in 2015 with his dad dancing, feud with Meek Mill, and for having an unusual relationship with Toronto city councillor and Twitter star Norm Kelly.

Death of Bobbi Kristina:
Days before the anniversary of her mother’s death, the body of Whitney Houston’s 22-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina was found unresponsive.

Shia LaBeouf Watching His Own Movies:
Shia LaBeouf watched all of his movies in a New York theatre and live-streamed the entire thing so the world could see every priceless reaction.

Dad Bods:
Actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Sandler and Jason Segel owned the dad bod this year, showing that rocking beer bellies in June is A-Ok.

Pizza Rat:
A furry rodent carrying a large piece of pizza through the New York subway went viral and resulted in a worldwide hashtag of #PizzaRat, with everyone sharing their love for the rodent and gluten duo.

Taylor Swift’s #SquadGoals:
Whether it was for her “Bad Blood” video that was filled with cameo appearances from her closest friends, or a surprise appearance during her 1989 world tour, 2015 was the year Taylor Swift’s squad was the envy of everyone.

Late Night Talk Show Change-ups:
In 2015 we said goodbye to David Letterman on The Late Show and Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. But we did say hello to their successors, Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah.

Netflix and Chill:
2015 may have been the year of celebrity breakups, but it was also the year of hookups – perhaps because of “Netflix and Chill,” which is code for let’s watch Netflix and hangout (aka hook up).

Music Streaming Gaining Popularity:
This past year music streaming apps like Apple Music and Spotify gained serious popularity, changing the way we listen to music online.

Kylie Jenner’s Lips:
Her sisters might be known for their curvaceous assets, but Kylie made headlines in 2015 after admitting to getting lip fillers. Kylie’s recently enlarged lips resulted in the #KylieJennerLipChallenge, which had boys and girls from around the world sucking on plastic lids or shot glasses to get enlarged lips. The end result? Hilarious compilation videos of teens failing to achieve the perfectly plumped lips.

Patricia Arquette’s Oscar Speech:
While accepting her Oscar for best supporting actress in Boyhood, Patricia Arquette took the opportunity to call for equal pay for women. Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez applauded Arquette from the crowd as she said, “to every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States of America.”

Justin Trudeau:
In 2015, Canadians spoke at the ballot box and Justin Trudeau’s Liberals won a majority government, ousting former Prime Minister Stephen Harper from office. The election of Trudeau has left women from around the world swooning over his boyish good looks and strong family values, and he even landed a Vogue photo shoot.

Lamar Odom’s Near-Death Experience:
Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband and former NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel and was left fighting for his life. After the news broke, Khloe rushed to his side but has denied rumours of the pair getting back together.

Martin Shkreli:
Martin Shkreli was constantly in the headlines for purchasing the exclusive Wu-Tang Clan album, drastically hiking the price of an AIDS drug, and, more recently, getting arrested for fraud. Shkreli proved once and for all the existence of karma.

#Doughnutgate:
Pop singer Ariana Grande got herself in a bit of hot water when a doughnut store’s video footage allegedly showed her licking doughnuts she wasn’t buying.

Donald Trump:
Regardless of his brash comments and lack of charm, the presidential hopeful and billionaire continues to prove that all publicity is good publicity as he continues to lead polls South of the Border.

Charlie Sheen HIV Positive:
During an interview with Matt Lauer, Mr. Sheen admitted that he has been HIV positive for the last four years and confirmed that he has paid out upwards of $10 million to keep the illness a secret.

Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe Mix-up:
At the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, Steve Harvey made a major mistake and incorrectly named Miss Colombia as Miss Universe and not Miss Philippines. The entire scene was incredibly awkward, and felt as uncomfortable as when Derek Zoolander accepted the Male Model of the Year award when it was supposed to go to Hansel.
