Worth Attending: Remembrance Day Events in Calgary

As young professionals, it is important to make time this weekend to commemorate our Canadian troops. It goes without saying that most of us will be sporting the poppy on our lapels as a sign of respect and support leading up to and including November 11, but showing up at one of the city’s services should definitely be on your calendar as well.

At 11:00am on Sunday it is important to take two minutes of silence to remember those who fought for us. For those of you interested in partaking in a service, here’s a list of ceremonies and events that will be happening in Calgary on Sunday for Remembrance Day…

Central Memorial Park Remembrance Day Service
Location: 1221 2 St SW
Held outdoors at Central Memorial Park, the service is hosted by The Calgary Highlanders and will begin at 10:30am.

The Military Museums’ Remembrance Day Service
Location: The Military Museums (4520 Crowchild Trail SW)
One of the largest services in Calgary, the ceremony will take place outside of the Museum at 10:45am.

Jubilee Auditorium Service
Location: Jubilee Auditorium (1415 14 Avenue NW)
Doors open at 8:30am for this indoor ceremony, which will begin at 10:30am. Hosted by HMSC TECUMSEH and the Calgary United Veterans Association, there will be musical performances from the HMCS TECUMSEH Band, Westwinds Music Society Womens’ Choir, and the Mount Royal Youth Orchestra.

Battalion Remembrance Day Ceremony
Location: 3001 Signal Hill Dr SW
Hosted by Alderman Richard Pootmans, the King’s Own Calgary Regiment, and the Royal Alberta United Services Institute, this will be the first service to be held at this historically significant location. The ceremony begins at 10:40am.

Remembrance Day Union Cemetery Tour
Location: 28 Ave and Spiller Rd SW
Tours are given in memory of fallen Canadian Forces and Mounted Police and will focus on the contribution of Calgary regiments to the great battles of the Boer War, World War I and World War II. Tours start at 1pm and 3:30pm.
