World’s First Home Body Scanner Tracks Your Fitness Journey in 3D

Sometimes simply standing in front of the mirror isn’t enough to encourage a visit to the gym.

For better or worse, the way that we see ourselves isn’t “reflective” of how we actually look. We tend to focus on those annoying problem areas while ignoring the physical improvement in other areas of our bodies.

A San Francisco startup is now making it easier to both identify areas for improvement and recognize when all your hard work at the gym has paid off by offering a new way of looking at body image.

Today, Naked Labs began taking pre-orders for its Naked 3D Fitness Tracker, a 3D body scanning system. Essentially a 3D mirror, it’s an internet-connected full-length that’s powered by a regular outlet and features a wirelessly rechargeable scale that rotates to produce a smooth scan. Designed for those who want to measure their fitness progress over time with goals and objective data, the mirror reveals how different areas are improving and declining over time.

According to TechCrunch, creator Farhad Farahbakhshian, an electrical engineer and former spin class instructor, noticed that many people who are overweight don’t see themselves as such, and people who have eating disorders like anorexia often see themselves as healthy when they don’t actually have a sustainable amount of fat on their bodies.

“Eyes do an amazing job of focusing on problem areas. You get into body dysmorphia if you’re not careful. And it’s hard to stay motivated. This shows people their real progress, or the ‘naked’ truth,” he says.

The Naked mobile app displays body scans as greyscale, 3D images to reveal an accurate and realistic illustration of the user’s body. It’s accompanied by data about their body, including areas for improvement or areas that are declining in body fat. It also alerts users if their set goals fall within a range of what’s considered healthy by fitness and health experts. The app tracks metrics like the symmetry and circumference of a user’s biceps, calves, thighs, hips, and waist, along with their body fat percentage, hip-to-waist ratio, and weight.

In short, the mirror will help you become as healthy (and good looking) as possible. The entire process takes just 20 seconds.

You can order one of the systems ($499 USD) today, but the shipping won’t begin until March 2017 – so it won’t help your summer 2016 beach body mission.
