Wine Minded Fun at the Vancouver Urban Winery

We’re always on the lookout for unique ways to escape falling into the abyss of our couch weeknights during the slow months of winter and recently made our way over to one of YVR’s best spots for a bit of socializing. Around for about two years now, Vancouver Urban Winery has popped up on our radar with an array of special events having been hosted at their stunning venue. But did you know they host public weekly wine tastings too? We didn’t – but that all changed after a recent post-work visit.

Inspired to try something off the beaten track, we headed over to their rustic Railtown location (55 Dunlevy Avenue) for a bit of self imposed ‘wine-ucation.’ With a few friends in tow, we pushed open the doors to their enormous 7,000-plus square foot space (anchored by a large, welcoming fireplace and cozy lounge) and saddled up to their expansive tasting bar to begin.

With well over a dozen different wines from throughout BC available to taste on tap, we made our selections (opting to go for the Sommelier’s Choice sampling), which (for $24) is a noteworthy deal. Served alongside our flight, samplings were capped off with suggested artisan foods, charcuterie and delicate cheeses meant to enhance our experience. And it did.

We thoroughly enjoyed being tutored through our tasting by the wine-savvy staff who helped bring to life the vineyard stories (beyond the bottle) and answered all our questions with a relatively straight face (it’s clear that we’re definitely no Jancis Robinson).

Post-tasting, we had the chance to peruse their on-site boutique where they sell wine-themed merchandise, gift items and plenty more. Having taken an interest in several of our samplings, we opted to nab a few extra bottles for later.

Our verdict: Vancouver Urban Winery is the perfect venue to head to that helps mix up your week night schedule. It’s a great option that adds a hint of the exotic if you can’t quite afford the trip to Napa and adds something special to impromptu date nights and gatherings alike. Reservations are recommended for parties of six or more, though.

What’s more: make a night of it and score a reservation for one of their upcoming Dine Out events as part of the Railtown Supper Party series (starting January 21st).
