Why Every Young Professional Needs a Cause

As the saying goes, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” For young professionals (YPs) looking to build strong, individual identities, as well as improve the world around us, this saying could not ring more true. Here at Notable we’re always promoting the 360-degree approach to life: work hard, play hard, rest hard, and give hard. So, if you haven’t run for a cure or marched for a cause, or given to the less fortunate anytime recently, here are four notable reasons to get out there and get giving:

1. Because it feels damn good: Whether it’s feeding someone a meal, raising money for medical research, or finding a pet a home, we at Notable have experienced that natural high that comes from working with charitable organizations that mean something to us. And we can honestly say that even after all the incredible parties, trips and adventures we’ve been lucky enough to experience, there is actually no better feeling than helping someone in need. Isn’t it also interesting that while working to better the circumstances of others, we actually better the circumstances for ourselves? If you want to boost your own confidence and build your own self-worth, forget selfies and self-help e-books; try self-sacrifice instead.

2. Because we have no damn excuse: We can walk, run, or march; build, donate, or simply spread the word. Whatever the method, there are just so many ways to care and give that can so easily fit into our busy YPs lives. We have the physical, mental, and financial abilities to be of huge help to so many organizations in need.  We can’t truthfully say that we don’t have a single free day a month to volunteer, or that we wouldn’t be of any help on a Habitat for Humanity construction site, or that we can’t afford to give up a small percentage of our paycheck. We are totally capable of all those things, so there is just no excuse not to. Whatever your chosen cause, just go and explore the myriad of fun and easy ways to get involved, via not only social media, but in real life too.

3. Because our lives should mean more, damn it: Ask yourself, as an individual, what you’re all about. We’re about our jobs, our family, our style of clothing, sure, but there’s got to be more. To be an important and necessary member of society, we must find interests outside of our own wants and needs that will help build our character and balance our perspectives. Being a YP who identifies with a cause, who takes on an issue as a part of our own personal identity, helps to establish us as unique, caring, and passionate people. So go dabble in some different causes and figure out what matters to you and what you’re really all about.

4. Because we’re really damn lucky: As Canadian young professionals, we have truly won the life lottery. We live in an incredible country and we lead pretty incredible lives. How lucky are we? Well, if a broken iPhone screen, expensive gas prices, and a need to lose 5 pounds so bad are your only basic complaints at the moment, then the answer is we’re much luckier than most. So why not spread that good fortune around and pick a cause that will help you to help others strive and love life just as much as we do?
