What’s Open in Toronto on New Year’s Day

It might be the first day of the New Year, but that won’t stop this city from offering a plethora of fun activities for you to choose from. If your NYE celebration hasn’t reduced you to a staycation on your couch, you can get out and greet 2014 by enjoying shopping, skating, science, art, and eating. Check out our list of what’s open in Toronto on January 1st to make sure you kick off the New Year just the way you want to.

Transportation
First thing’s first: the TTC will be offering its Sunday service. So you now have no excuse not to get around town. Except, you know, your giant hangover.

Swimming
Yes, seriously. The Toronto Polar Bear Club will once again be diving into Lake Ontario at noon on January 1st. Do you have what it takes to start the year off with the king of cold showers?

Movies
Most movie theatres will be open and running. We can’t imagine it’ll be a slow day, though, so you should probably plan to be in your seats long before those annoying commercials kick in if you don’t want to be watching from the front row.

Skating
All of the city’s public rinks will be open. So go ahead and get your blade on, push a pylon around, or just watch from the sidelines as others freeze and you enjoy your body (and mind) warming Irish coffee.

Shopping
“Once more into the breach, dear friends.” The Eaton Centre will be open from 12pm to 5pm. May God have mercy on your soul.

Culture
The ROM will be open from 10am to 8:30pm on New Year’s Day. This is one of the last chances to see the Mesopotamia exhibit on loan from the British Museum.

The AGO will be open from 10am to 4pm on New Year’s Day. Starting anything with art is never a bad idea, so why would 2014 be any different?

The Ontario Science Centre will be open from 10am to 6pm on New Year’s Day. Start 2014 off by checking out what smart people are saying these days.

Rob Ford will host the annual New Year’s Levée at City Hall from 2 to 4pm. You can go meet Rob but we can’t promise it’ll be a cultural experience.

And 8 Places to Eat!

The Ceili Cottage
Sticky toffee pudding for breakfast – yes, please. Open on New Year’s Day at 2pm.

Pearl Harbourfront
Celebrate 2014 with Dim Sum! Open on New Year’s Day at 10:30am.

They have an A.M. Poutine. They know us too well. They’ll be open on New Year’s Day at 10am.

Rosedale Diner
They have a menu item called Eggs Dostoevsky. Enough Said. Open on New Year’s Day at 11:30am.

The Sister
The Ultimate Hangover Sandwich features fried eggs, Kimchee, bacon, and garlic mayo on toasted sourdough. Ya, we’ll probably see you there. Open on New Year’s Day at 11am.

Le Petit Dejeuner
This adorable King St. East diner will be open on New Year’s Day at 9am.

Caplansky’s
Smoked meat as a first meal? Sounds like a resolution worth waking up for. They’ll be open on New Year’s Day at 10am.

The Drake
One of the places to see and be seen no matter what day of the year it is, the Cafe will be open on New Year’s Day at 7:30am (with limited options) while a full brunch menu will kick off at 9am.
