What to Wear this Spring: The Young Professional Gentleman

Last week, we asked three fabulously fashionable Canadian young professional (YP) boutique owners to comment on what is hot for the YP lady this spring, and what we can expect to see on city streets across the country. Now, our attention shifts to the suave and stylish YP gentleman as we turn to some in-the-know YPs for insight on what to wear now that the warmer weather is finally here.

“If wearing colour seems daunting, start small with accessories that are guaranteed to pop your everyday outfits. A pair of hot pink shoelaces, multi-coloured pocket squares and brightly coloured socks are a good start. For the more adventurous, add one bold piece – red chinos, yellow t-shirt, green blazer – and co-ordinate them with your neutral black, white, greys and navys. Another way to incorporate colour is tonal dressing; wearing blue, but different tones of blue, is a great way to freshen up your spring wardrobe.”

Day-to-night suits
“The three-piece suit is no longer strictly kept pressed for the boardroom – go from day to night and opt for a navy hue to shake things up. Perfect tailoring for work and for play has to be the most important trend for menswear this spring. Lifetime has a slew of great options for bottoms, suitable for both the office and the outdoors.”

– Reid Stewart, Co-Founder, Lifetime Collective

“Whether it’s a pant, shirt, or briefcase, camo is probably one of the hottest trends this season that truly any man can pull off. You can do it in the typical army green/khaki, or even in a cool colour.”

Trench coats and blazers
“A slim-fit trench coat, long enough to wear over your suit jacket but stylish enough to wear with your coloured chinos.”

“A double-breasted blazer; look for one that falls nicely when left open and trimmed and shorter when closed. Smart enough to wear with dress pants, cool enough to wear with jeans.”

Bright, Bold Prints
Incorporate some prints and add a little brightness to your professional getup, like our Cecil Printed Button Up or the Xavier Multi Sweater.”

The baseball bomber/varsity jacket
“Living in Canada, outerwear is an important category and it’s always exciting when more options become available! The bomber jacket is a great casual everyday piece that any guy can pull off.”

– JF, JoshuaDAVID

“Bow ties, knit ties, cotton and linen pocket squares are all the must-have accessories for spring.”

“Florals are not just for women. Any confident guy can sport this print. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing a bright, pastel-coloured floral shirt, you can always pull it off as an accessory, such as a floral printed tie or socks.”

– JF, JoshuaDAVID

Colourful Tailoring
“You’re going to see coloured blazers and suits in most menswear boutiques this season. Everyone has a navy, black, and grey suit in their wardrobe. Why not spice it up with a hot red suit that can be worn together or separately?”
