What to Do on Christmas Eve in Vancouver

Holiday hours are in full effect, and your favourite haunts are likely closing up shop early, or altogether, on Christmas Eve. Whether they’re new traditions or old, here are our suggestions for a festive night in the city.

Christmas Market
Christmas Eve is the last chance to check out the colourful and bustling festivities at the popular Vancouver Christmas Market. Modeled after a traditional German market, you’ll be able to browse for a last-minute handcrafted gift from one of the artisan vendors, pick up a fresh baked loaf of bread for dinner, or unwind with a mulled wine. The market is open 11am – 6pm on December 24.

Take a Turkey Break
If you’re going to be slaving away in the kitchen on the big day, that’s the last place you’ll want to spend time on Christmas Eve. Luckily, Hidden Tasting Bar & Social Lounge at The Westin Grand hotel is open December 24. Their Fraser Valley Turkey Schnitzel is a nod to holiday tradition, though the international flare of their menu looks like a welcomed break from the tryptophan.

Ice Skating
We challenge you to find a more picture-perfect Christmas scene than the swirling flurry of scarves, toques and ice skates. Robson Square’s ice rink is open and free to the public until 9pm on Christmas Eve. Rentals are available for $4.

Festive Cocktails
The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver epitomizes classic Christmas tradition with festive décor juxtaposed with stunning heritage architecture. This seasonal ambience is the perfect setting to enjoy an eggnog or mulled wine at 900 West Restaurant and Lounge, open until midnight on Christmas Eve.

Mad Dash for Shopping
In the spirit of the season we’ll reserve judgment for your tardiness, and instead offer some solutions. Very few retailers are open past 5pm, but we found a select few that are hoping to help out the last few scrambling shoppers:

Revolucion Yaletown – Classic gifts for the gentleman in your life including leather goods, accessories and cigars. Open until 8pm.

Legacy Liquor Store – This Olympic Village destination has the largest selection of liquor, beer and wine in the city. Open until 11pm.

Meinhardt Fine Foods – Gift baskets, gourmet foods and hostess gifts abound. Open until 7pm.
