Video: Families of Two Young Men Killed While Driving High Want You to See the POV Footage

Sometimes you need to be confronted by a raw glimpse of the fragility of life to really understand what “actions have consequences” truly means.

Or, more specific to this post, how insanely stupid it is to get high (or distracted in any way) and drive.

That’s the stance two U.K. families are taking in deciding to share POV footage of their sons being killed in a car crash while on a cocktail of prescription and illegal drugs. Kyle Careford, 20, and Michael Owen, 21, raced a car through dark Sussex streets at up to 90mph, the passenger recording the escapade right up until the crash. The camera continued to record as a woman approaches the car to ask if anyone inside is alive.

Needless to say, the footage is incredibly disturbing and appropriately sobering.

Given the families’ consent, it’s also very much worth sharing. Though campaigns against driving high and distracted driving are becoming increasingly realistic, no amount of simulation can come close to mimicking the effect of seeing how one’s irresponsibility can play out in real life.

“If all this stops one person from making the same mistake, then some good has come from showing this video,” said the families in a joint statement. “Watching the video was very upsetting, but I’m hoping it can be used in a positive way, by showing young people what could happen to them.”

The next time you’re thinking of getting behind the wheel while impaired, hopefully this video will help remind you what’s at stake.

Warning: this footage could upset some viewers.
