Vancouver’s West End Gets a Taste of France at Left Bank Bistro

Tucked directly off of Denman between the bustle of Robson Street and West Georgia, Left Bank is set amidst a hub of activity.  Your attention can’t help but be caught by the bright and playful furnishings featuring slick red Tolix chairs, bistro tables and an elegant sense of design. There’s a certain sense of chicness that infiltrates the space (once home to Le Parisien Bistro).

Everything is dialed to perfection with the addition of industrial design fixtures, textured white wall tiling, natural wood finishings and statement lighting throughout… and we’d be remiss not to mention the new 35-seat patio owner John Blakeley secured licensing for (unheard of in this part of Vancouver).

Massive street-front windows that open onto Denman showcase a new bar area and leather banquet as well as ample lounge seating. It all helps to create ideal zones for tucking into a causal glass of wine with friends, getting cozy on a date or enjoying the ambiance solo.

The bistro’s cuisine comes courtesy of Spencer Watts, who has expanded his role as Executive Chef at Left Bank’s sister restaurant, Bistro Pastis. At Left Bank, the 2012 World Culinary Olympics Team Canada silver medalist has created a modern French bistro menu with unmistakable influence from the French colonies.

Look for an ample bar menu perfectly suited to the casual room featuring French dishes with a decidedly North African twist.  Items like lamb tartar with charamoundi spiced cauliflower and mint pesto, spicy albacore tuna cone, fresh figs, heritage egg custard and black sesame pomme frites are perfect bar bites.

Nosh on freshly shucked oysters, charcuterie and cheeses, or opt for their fresh grape and goat cheese truffles to satisfy a lighter appetite.

Left Bank’s dinner menu features steamed mussels with red curry coconut and fresh lime, five-spice duck confit, vegetarian and lamb tagines, hump back shrimp and classics like steak frites (menu items range from $2.50 to $22).

To top everything off, Left Bank has a wide array of cocktails (try the flying kangaroo or French sidecar) and selection of predominantly French wines, as well as craft beer choices.

Left Bank is located at 751 Denman Street. For more info and to view full menu, click here
