Vancouver’s Most Notable Mexican Restaurants

We’re closing in on another wintery month (though, admittedly, a recent sighting of Cherry Blossoms proved rather uplifting). However, that doesn’t stave off our craving for a someplace warm. With no such vacation days on the horizon and another month or two left of chilly temps and drizzle, we figure the next best thing to seeking the sun is to at least find places to eat around town that channel that vibe.

Lucky for us, Vancouver is loaded with spots whose menus point the palate south – we’re talking Mexican grub worth drooling over in this post and, two Margaritas in, we think you’ll likely agree.

First up, Las Margaritas gets the party started at their W.4th location in the heart of Kitsilano. We love the laidback vibe of the room, large bar/lounge area and boisterous owner who’s always chatting away with guests. Their menu is definitely wallet-friendly and goes on for pages with offerings. Look for dishes influenced by So-Cal, Baja and Northern Mexico. Order one of ten different types of Margaritas and choose from their premium selection of tequila. Wash it all down with their never-ending supply of house-made chips and salsa.

Across the bridge, head to the West End and be sure to check out Lolita’s South of the Boarder Cantina at 1326 Davie Street.  This has long been a favourite haunt for the Notable team; it’s quaint, cozy and eccentric, just like the staff and style of food.  They feature a great cocktail list and rotating wine list (not to mention good supply of Mexican beer) and menu offering original takes on traditional dishes. Be sure to order their Lolita’s soft taco platters if stopping by with a group. It’s simply massive (and delicious) with nearly ten different items to help fuel conversation. Oh, and lest we forget to mention their to-die-for spicy ceviche – a must.

Another spot we’ve grown to love is the recently opened El Azteca Modern Tequila Lounge (pictured at top) in Yaletown. Tucked away on Mainland Street, it’s in the heart of all the downtown action, easy to access from the Canada Line, and sports a fantastic menu loaded with tequila (as the name suggests), authentic and simple Mexican cuisine (try their chicken mole and roasted pork wrapped in banana leave with peltre bowl and any one of their six different tacos). Find them at 1130 Mainland Street.

Is your appetite for the South worked up into frenzy yet? Well, find your fix on February 10th when the Mexican Fiesta is set to take place – and you can get all your favourite dishes (created by Chef Menajem of Chabad Catering) in one place. For one night only, it’s an all-you-can-eat Mexican food affair, with a kosher twist. This special evening has several options to fit the bill, with a sit-down dinner and take-away service available – all courtesy of the culinary talents of Menajem. The event takes place at 5750 Oak Street. For more details and to reserve your spot click here.
