Vancouver Weekender: September 29th through October 2nd, 2011

We’re in full Fall-effect in Vancouver (weather wise) this weekend. The forecast is calling for a soggy start that will end with a smidge of sunshine, or so we hope. Despite what the weatherman might have to say, we’ve got your weekend sorted and it’s packed with noteworthy options.

Might we suggest you gear up for your weekend with a check-in to check out the recently opened Novo Pizzeria that has taken over 2118 Burrard Street in Kitsilano. Open daily for lunch and dinner, this Italian spot touts more than the latest VPN pizza craze that seems to have a firm grip on our city. You’ll be thrilled by the fresh selection of panini, antipasti, and salada fresca like their colourful roasted beet salad or grilled prawn and fennel fix.

Feeling up for a cinematic celebration? Then move your money-maker down to Canvas Lounge in Gastown for the Annual JetSet Crew’s VIFF party that shines the spotlight on Canadian and International film-making talent. Stroll up the red carpet and take in one of the best parties of the season, once again hosted by ET Canada’s Rick Campanelli – this is an event not to be missed. Be sure to purchase tickets now for this event as it will surely sell out.

Keep the rainy day at bay the following morning and schedule a brunch stop at the award-winning Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe (pictured above) located at 2095 W 4th Ave. Kick back for some comfort food amidst an entertaining crowd and décor guaranteed to rev-up the java-fueled conversation. This long-time Vancouver favourite is renown just as much for its hot sauce and hollandaise as it is for its delectable slices of pie (our vote: go old school Apple).

Looking for a mid-day sugar-rush? Look no further than this weekend’s (Saturday only) Baker’s Market set to put your sweet tooth to the test. Discover freshly-baked artisanal goods and stock up on old-fashioned favourites. Who needs room for dessert anyways…?

Next up, channel your inner interior designer and head downtown to the Vancouver Convention Centre for a day of inspiration at the annual IDS West. (That’s Interior Design Show West, if you’ve been hibernating for years.) This top-notch design show features more than 200 different exhibitors showcasing services and cutting-edge products that’ll catch your eye and have you seeing blue…prints, that is. Meet and mingle with top industry gurus and scoop up fine finds.

After a day sleuthing out for the latest styles for your home, we think you should ditch your space and head to OZ for the night. We’re talking about the foodie-friendly Dishing Up Australia event taking place at the Museum of Vancouver on Saturday, starting at 7pm. Let the gals behind House Wine lead you through a tasting of 40 different Australian wines expertly-paired with culinary creations courtesy of The Bon Vivant Consulting Group’s Chef Dino Renaerts.

Roll into the remainder of the weekend and grab a coffee and freshly baked goodies to-go at West Vancouver’s Crema Cafe – located at 1495 Bellevue Avenue. Coffee clearly runs in the family: the owner’s three sons just launched Gastown’s Revolver. Head on down Marine Drive and enjoy a brisk Sunday stroll along the picturesque paths within Lighthouse Park and enjoy a stunning West Coast view.

Next, freshen up and meander down to the Contemporary Art Gallery at 555 Nelson Street and partake in their 40th Anniversary celebrations and latest installations by Thomas Bewick (Tale-pieces), Frederico Herrero (Vibrantes) and Sister Corita Kent (To create is to relate). To learn about the gallery’s free guided tours as part of this weekend’s Culture Days celebrations, click here.

En route to the home-front, swing by the Kitsilano Farmers Market and grab some fresh grub. Take advantage of one of the last opportunities of the season to load up on local offerings before heading home to create your own feast.
