Vancouver Weekender: September 12 through 14, 2014

It’s mid-September already and our schedule’s packed with noteworthy events happening around town. Get back to training this fall and gear up for a colourful fun-run, check out an alternative music fest, down a few brew at the Whistler Beer Fest, check out the annual Passions Gala and more over the next three days…

Thursday

Sneak out of town (if you can swing it) and head to Whistler for this year’s Whistler Village Beer Festival. You’ll want to check out the schedule of events here and save room to sample suds from the nearly 60 different breweries who are participating at this event. Seriously, what’s better than sipping brew surrounded by majestic mountains drenched in sun? The festival runs all weekend long.

Friday

Grab the Seabus and head over to the North Shore Friday night to catch one of the last Twilight Markets taking place this season. Held on Fridays starting at 5pm until late at the revamped Shipyards, this market features well over 80 different vendors, live music, art, and 30 food trucks to feed you complemented by a beer garden.

The 7th annual Accordion Noir Festival is back and it’s for more than lovers of this rather unusual instrument… we guarantee it.  Broaden your mind and catch a variety of different events as part of the fest including a kitchen party, magic and mime entertainment, burlesque shows, a Poupon parade and more.

Saturday

The Color Run is back for another fun 5K. Billed as the happiest 5K on the planet, ditch your fancy workout gear in favour of clothes you won’t mind getting splashed with neon paint – this run is all about getting sweaty and messy. Register online or day of for $60 and help raise funds for KidSport Vancouver..

Grab those reusable bags and beeline your way to one of a few farmers’ markets around town on Saturday. Score the best produce and fresh-made goods of the early fall season at both the West End Farmers’ Market or head over to Trout Lake Farmers’ Market for your nutritional fix. They both feature plenty of local food and artisan products guaranteed to keep you fully stocked.

If you haven’t already scored a seat at this season’s Bard on the Beach, you better do it quick (i.e. this weekend) before the tent disappears. The city’s annual outdoor Shakespeare festival features local productions of The Tempest (to Sept. 18), Equivocation (to Sept. 19), as well as Cymbeline and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (to Sept. 20). Grab the VIP treatment and enjoy a dinner al fresco prior to show time.

Sunday

Don’t hang up your party hat just yet. This Sunday night, pull out the LBD and head to the Passions Gala, one of Vancouver’s best small gala events that raises funds and awareness for the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation. This party features the creations of top restaurants from around the city, a silent auction, New Zealand wines and more.

It’s last call for the Vancouver Fringe Festival, so don’t slack off this Sunday and catch one of the final performances. The festival has been a huge success so far this year, featuring more than 700 performances for the duration of its 11-day run.
