Vancouver Weekender: October 21st through 23rd, 2011

With only one more weekend to go until Halloween, we’ve integrated some eerily-fun activities into this weekend’s round-up…

Start things off with post-work libations at Salt Tasting Room (pictured above), tucked down Blood Alley in Gastown. This amazing little spot is quaint, cozy, and chock-full of charcuterie fixings and a killer wine, beer and sherry list that is the perfect way to end a long week at the office. Unwind by tucking into a sampling of their featured artisanal cheeses, meats and condiments whilst sipping craft beer for a gluttonous treat.

Next up, ditch the work-duds and suit up for a night of old-fashioned Haunted House fun and head out to the PNE to partake in their annual Fright Nights at Playland. This hallowed event features five freakish, scream-worthy attractions guaranteed to leave you breathless. Tickets start at $25 per person and the attraction opens nightly starting at 6pm. (Workplace warning if you click the link above: turn the volume down on your computer so the boss doesn’t know.)

Roll into the remainder of your ghoulishly-good weekend and enjoy a waterside brunch at one of our notable, award-winning favourites: C Restaurant. A long-standing supporter of locally-sourced products and sustainable seafood, C Restaurant offers a delectable selection of savoury breakfast fixes. Try their Spot Prawn and Goat Cheese Frittata, sinful Brioche French Toast or fragrant Smoked Salmon served atop a Toasted Bagel for a simple culinary treat.

Next up, we think you should do a little planning ahead for the night and check out this year’s options as part of the 7th Annual Taste of Yaletown celebration. Running through the 30th, this is a notable way to get out and dine at some of our city’s hottest spots for a fraction of the cost. Reservations can be hard to come by, but with more than 20 different locales to sample, we think you should plan on it for Saturday night. Take a peek at what’s up for offer here, and let the dining begin. Once again, a percentage of all proceeds from this event will go to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. We think that’s noteworthy good news, indeed.

In keeping with our spook-tacular weekend agenda, be sure to check out the ongoing Parade of Lost Souls Festival taking place until October 29th. With a variety of ways to get involved and let you inner-freak out, they’ve got plenty to offer: including mask-making tutorials, dance, and a Secret Souls Walk.

As Saturday evening rolls around, we’re hoping you’re ready for round two of our Halloween-inspired chills as we’ve got a few additional options worth checking out.

Grab a group of friends and head out to Potter’s House of Horrors or stay a bit closer to home and visit the Dunbar Haunted House for a thrilling encounter of the ghostly kind.

On Sunday, grab your coffee and a light bite at Yaletown’s Agro Cafe before heading over to the Roundhouse to take partake in Vancouver Diwali 2011 celebrating the “Diwali Downtown” Cultural Extravaganza event. This explosion of cultural performances, food, music and dance is a spectacle not to be missed. Admission is by donation and is sure to inspire your senses. Catch the festival’s final day (Sunday, October 23rd) from noon until 6pm.

Wind-down your weekend with a trip to Gastown’s Pourhouse for a relaxed night fuelled by good eats, great cocktails and smooth live tunes from a rotating roster of talented local jazz artists.
