Vancouver Weekender: October 12 through 14, 2012

Though we’re looking at a sweep of rainy weather this coming weekend, that doesn’t mean you need to stay indoors and hide. Far from it, as there’s plenty going on around Vancouver guaranteed to keep you out and active – starting with restaurant openings, pop-up shops and festivals. Read on in our weekender to see what we think is worth noting.

Post-work on Friday, be sure to beeline it over to one of the city’s newest spots to nosh at Lily Mae’s Comfort Cafe, located in a redone century-old space in Vancouver’s historic Gastown.  We love the European style of the space and food that is clearly ‘rustic comfort’ infused (with French influence). A well-appointed wine list and innovative cocktails (coupled with the adorable owners!) guarantee this spot will be a hit.

Once you’ve filled your belly, why not get into the knit of things and stop by the Croatian Cultural Centre for the Knit City Kick Off Party (starts at 7pm). Just in time for dreary fall and winter nights, get inspired to take up this popular hobby (and perhaps get a head-start on Christmas gifts). Mingle with other like-minded knitters, get tips, score some sweet deals on yarn, needles and meet Sylvia Olsen, who will present on behalf of Coast Salish women’s legacy and talk about the legacy of the well-known Cowichan Sweater.

Roll into Saturday by grabbing brunch at one of our all-time favourite spots: Two Chefs and a Table. We love their latest menu…and can’t stop thinking about how good that Bourbon and Bacon must be after a late night out. You know what they say: hair off the dog…

Next up, get your shop on and be sure to check out a few pop-up markets happening. On our suggested Saturday agenda, head to The Chosen Ones: Group Vintage Sale (fall edition) taking place and loaded with vintage finds. A plethora of vendors will be on-site to showcase their expertly picked pieces at The Waldorf Hotel. We suggest you bring an extra bag for your new finds. Also worth checking out, the Mutts & Co. Variety Store has set up its own pop-up shop in Vancouver for the past week. Be sure to make a point of checking out the great collection of Canadian-produced pieces, take in a tutorial and even get a free haircut!

Also taking place on Saturday, the annual Apple Festival is happening at the UBC Botanical Garden to celebrate all things apple. Aside from the fact that fall is one of the best seasons to check out the gardens, you’ll also have a chance to sample some of the more than 40,000 different varieties of organic and heritage apples. There will be food demos, entertainment and apples for purchase.

If you are lucky enough to have scored tickets to one of the longest-running (arguably most stylish and well attended) gala events Vancouver has to offer, then we hope that means you’re heading to the 30th Annual Arts Umbrella: Splash! on Saturday night. This outstanding VIP party and art auction features stunning work from globally recognized artists, delectable appetizers and wines to enjoy. Tickets are a bit of an investment, but young professionals are guaranteed a fantastic, enlightened evening fuelled by plenty of networking opportunities.

Come Sunday, if you’re not hitting the gym for your workout, and don’t fancy venturing outdoors, why not heat things up and try out a bit of Bikram‘s for a change? Stretch it out at any of their morning classes and leave feeling cleansed and rejuvenated for the last day of the weekend.

Looking for something else to help you make the most of your Sunday funday? Be sure to check out the Vancouver Home + Design Show taking place at BC Place until day’s end. Whether you’re looking to find some stylish inspiration for your home and workspace, or simply like to keep an eye on decor trends, you’ll find everything under one roof (not to mention at the hundreds of vendor booths on site).

Wind things down Sunday evening by heading out to the newly opened Heirloom Restaurant for a healthy dose of organic, vegetarian (and vegan) cuisine that’ll help ensure you start off the work week well fed and ready to go.
