Vancouver Weekender: November 18th through 20th, 2011

This weekend, Vancity has plenty to offer discerning young professionals. Whether you’re into a quick day trip, shredding the slopes, or sipping your way through a slew of specialty scotch on offer, we’ve found some great options to fill your days in a most notable way.

Start your weekend off with a post-work stop at The New Oxford (pictured above) located in Yaletown. Grab a craft-brewed beer or choice cocktail offering from their well-priced menu and tuck into some fancy pub fare (we tend to go wild for their wings) and catch the game as you unwind after a hectic work week.

Speaking of games, feeling up for some live action? Score tickets for this Friday’s Giants versus Royals Western Hockey League game taking place at the Pacific Coliseum starting at 7:30pm. Starting at only $18, that leaves plenty of room on the budget for all that oh-so-good fan fare.

Taking place all weekend is the one and only Vancouver Men’s Show (though it is a bit of a trek out to the Tradex Trade and Exhibition Centre in Abbotsford). This is the quintessential ‘manly’ answer for any notable guys craving a full-on extravaganza of testosterone-laden activities, demos, competitions, tastings and plenty more. We’re talking an exotic meat BBQ feast, Classic Hot Rod display, Strongman competition, Fly-fishing expo, and much more. The show runs from Friday to Sunday.

Also marking its return this weekend (and offering yet another excuse to get out of town for a day trip) is the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival, entering its 16th year. Unleash your inner nature-lover, take advantage of the relatively clear forecast this weekend, and drive out towards a handful of historic viewing sites to catch a glimpse of these majestic wild birds, as well as squeeze in a fall hike while you’re at it.

In other active news, Whistler has just announced that the ski season will be starting a week early (as in this weekend!) with Whistler Mountain open for business (Blackcomb Mountain opens on November 24th). So get waxed, sharpened, and ready to hit the powder, thanks to a visit from La Niña.

Looking to hunker down closer to home this weekend? Be sure to swing by this year’s Hopscotch Festival, one of the West Coast’s largest and longest running Scotch, Whiskey and Beer Festivals that has now become the largest Beer and Whiskey Festival in Canada. With more than 250 products to sip, sample, and swig – you’ll be notably impressed. We think you ought to take advantage of the largest collection of premium products on offer and educate that discerning palate we know you’ve got. (It runs until November 20th).

Here’s one more reason to stay in town: the 15th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl is back this weekend and is bound to attract a slew of artistically-minded Vancouverites yet again! This amazing (and free) weekend-long festival offers visitors the unique opportunity to explore local artists’ working studios in the Main and Commercial Drive neighbourhoods. With more than 10,000 people involved – we think this is a definite must-go pick.

Unwind on Sunday night and grab a bite to-go, or park yourself at the bar and get to know your neighbours at one of our favourites: Nook. We love their laidback, cozy atmosphere that’s always electric with activity, not to mention a killer menu filled with Italian offerings (we dare you to resist the exquisite Mozzarella di Buffala served with heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and drizzled in olive oil). Also on our must-try list is Rigatoni Boscaiola, and any one of their freshly-made, oven-baked pizza creations.
