Vancouver Weekender: November 1 through 3, 2013

Friday, why not grab a bite at Sol Sunbelt Cookery and check out their new fall/winter menu of Mediterranean offerings? Chef Abdel has been creating (and cooking) up a storm.

Also taking place Friday evening is the monthly Friday Night Supper at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral where you’ll score a chance to load up on your perogy fill for the year. This always-fun night is definitely fuelled by food and casual conversation. For about $12, you are guaranteed to leave full. Learn more about this monthly event here.

Post-eats, you’ll need your appetite for our next suggestion, Fright Fest, at the PNE (closes its haunted doors on November 2).  Embrace the spooky spirit and partake in a bit of frightful fun at the notorious Fright Fest. With a multitude of spooked out haunted houses, rides and more, this is definitely one not to miss.

Wake up bright and early and grab a tasty brunch at the Homer Street Cafe (you’ve got to order their fried Nutella and banana Monte Cristo, it’s magical).

Next, walk it off and head over to the East Van Flea Market at the Wise Hall. The Eastside Flea Market is new to the East Vancouver hood and one that features an array of local vendors showcasing their handmade goods, vintage clothing, antiques, art, craftsmen items and plenty more. It’s the perfect stopping off point for those of you looking to spruce of the place for the season, or perhaps score a few gems in advance of the holiday gift-giving season

Post scavenger hunt at the Flea Market, head to another market (Winter’s Farmers Market, that is) for some more finds of the nutritional kind. Nat Bailey Stadium is back as a main venue for all your seasonal, fresh from the farm fixings. Featuring a long list of suppliers, you’re guaranteed to stock your fridge for the week ahead and then some.

If you haven’t yet caught up with the 10th Annual Diwali Festival, this weekend is a great opportunity to do so. Be sure to check out the Bazaar taking place at Yaletown’s Roundhouse on both Saturday and Sunday.

Time permitting, make your way over to Olympic Village and recharge with some tea. That’s right, it’s pinkies up at the first Vancouver Tea Festival that is taking place with hundreds of vendors, tastings, tea ceremonies and more. Learn all about this ancient drink and chill out at the Shaktea Tea Lounge while you’re at it. Tickets are only $5 to get in, so there’s no excuse.

After a full day on the town, go casual and grab a spot at one of the city’s best spots to watch the game as the Canucks try to battle it out against the Leafs starting at 4pm. Our best bets: Joey Restaurant‘s (Bentall location)) sprawling bar and lounge area has a great game-time vibe, as does Red Card Sport Bar

Given that the weather is back to looking iffy each day (yup, we mean rain, rain, rain), getting up on the early side and venturing outside loses it appeal. There are still several trails you can tackle that are relatively covered (and worthwhile). Why not brave it and head over to Quarry Rock in Deep Cove, or run the network of trails at Cleveland Dam? Both offer spectacular views and plenty of fresh air to help you recharge.

After you’ve dried off and cleaned up, grab a bite of lunch and nab tickets to Fly Over Canada. This buzzed about cinematic treat is definitely a must (and the perfect thing to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon). It’s a life-like experience that will actually make you feel as though you’re onboard for an aerial journey across the country. Not for the faint at heart (or those that get motion sickness). Check it out here.
